Us 30 across Appalachians to Gettysburg, PA

Going from Cleveland area (Cuyahoga National Park) to Gettysburg - is US 30 from I 70 East to Gettysburg across the Appalachians OK for towing a 37' trailer or would it be better to drop down and use the interstate, even though that would be a bit longer? AAA has us going the most direct route but not sure if that is easiest for towing.
  • We got off of the Interstate at the Breezewood exit this spring and took US30 east to go to Gettysburg. There are two stretches of about 3 1/2 miles each with 8% to 9% grades, halfway decent shoulders, and truck ramps where our exhaust brake was worth it's weight in gold. (40' DP towing a car). Worse, though is the climb to the top of each of those. If you met someone coming down westbound as you're going up eastbound, and he is having control problems, you are on the outside of the road hanging onto the cliff, and have absolutely no shoulders and no escape route.

    Stick with the interstate.
  • Take the PA turnpike. You won't like the toll rate BUT you'll recoup some of those tolls with better gas mileage.

  • Having ben a 50 year plus resident of Chambersburg, do yourself a favor and take the interstate. If you want to see Chambersburg for any reason just drive the TV there.
  • Thank you for your quick responses - we will stay on the interstate tomorrow! It's more miles but probably not that much longer timewise, and definitely easier towing.
  • Agree with gbopp. We missed the ramp for the Turnpike one year and continued west on Rt. 30. BIG mistake.

Stay on the interstate. I-76 is the Pennsylvania Turnpike, follow it east and get off at US 15 south to Gettysburg.

US 30 is a lot of mountains and winding roads. It has a couple 'runaway truck' ramps for trucks that burn out their brakes.

Pay the tolls and stay on the Turnpike and US 15. It's all 4 lane road.

But, if you're not towing anything, I recommend US 30. It's a nice scenic drive.

Another option is stay on I-70 to Frederick Maryland and take US 15 north to Gettysburg. You'll probably have more traffic taking that route.
  • You could get off the Turnpike at Exit 189 and take SR 75 South to US 30 East at Fort Loudon. That will take out two mountain crossings and will let you see Chambersburg that was a Civil War town.
