Visas

I have family visiting me from UK at Christmas. Picking them up in Phoenix and driving to Kino Bay. I want to try avoid the backup at KM 21 for visas due to the huge numbers of paisanos going south for the holidays. Does anyone know if they can get visas in advance on line? They are British citizens and I will have a visa already. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Don't know about actual visas but before I became an American citizen I crossed all the time with my UK passport. But that was before 2006 so maybe the rules have changed. I have advised my family to contact the Mexican Embassy in London and I will call the Consulate in Phoenix.

Thank you all for the advice. I just don't want to spend hours at KM 21 if it can be avoided!

Having a piece of paper filled out means the MIGRA does not have to reach beneath the counter and grab an empty FMM form.

Still needs to have a valid passport presented, stamped, and be paid for, and FMM form stamped. Right in the office of INM. You save nothing. I carried a clipboard.

Good Link. That pretty much covers it. And I learned something new. Might add that to my Border FAQ sticky.

I believe what we call a Mexican 'visa', the FMM, is not a real visa. It is for the use of US and Canadian citizens only (and maybe central America). For a foreign national, I think they must get a real visa from the local Mexican Consulate. But not all Consulates handle visas, you might have to go to an Embassy instead. Call your local Consuate/Embassy to check.

Above all, I wouldn't drive all the way to KM 21 just to find out that your friends can't cross.

You can't get them on line.
Some years you can get them at your local Consulate, if you have one nearby.

Your best bet is to contact the Mexican Consulate in Phoenix, you have plenty of time to do so but I would do it now. Here's the latest contact information. Provecho!
