any canadians leave rv in florida

Hi,
Looking for info about leaving 5th wheel in Florida for summer instead of hauling it back home. I know in Manitoba, Autopac won't insure it unless it is occupied.
Anyone have info re obtaining US insurance and what is involved. ie: re register in Florida, legalities etc.
Thanks
  • ....on the 8840 question "...recording a stored Canadian-plated trailer in Florida while you are out of state {read: back in country of residence 'Canada' for 6 months}..." the responses are as clear as mud :B

....any tax precedents out there? IRS rulings ?

Now, on the insurance issue: this could be interesting (approaching a homeowners' insurance issuer)...hmmmm?
  • oh boy: I cannot answer your tax question but there is what I would do. Go to any decent insurance agency in Florida and get homeowners insurance. If you have to remove the plates do so. Your unit can be imported into Florida but it might have to go to the border or some major port. My solution is much simpler. BUT Florida may have some sort of tax on the unit if it is permanent.

    Moisheh
  • A 2nd residence has to be claimed. We file an 8840 but earn no money nor work and the unit would be for storage only not for use while stored.. I know if you leave a yacht here it has to go out of country for 21 days (cruising permit) or it becomes a taxable asset.
Hence my inq's re leaving it as I want to know what others have found out. I know there are those that just leave it uninsured and mums the word but if you want to insure it then reg etc is rq;d..

Don't forget to declare it on your 8840

Please explain: you must be referring to line 15 on the 8840 form, correct?

Is a tow trailer (whether bought and registered in the US by a Canadian, or brought down to US and registered in Canada) in a storage facility, or a yacht in dry dock that a Canadian leaves in the US considered "a permanent home" ? Does the IRS mean: a fixed real property (ie. condo, house, town house, single family home, or trailer installed on an owned or leased lot with a legal address) ?

Have you gotten a written clarification from the IRS on this question?
I don't have anything in writing but I do know that the IRS allows a mobile home or travel trailer to count as principle or secondary residence for the purpose of deducting mortgage interest.

I assumed if they allow it for that purpose, then they will count it as a residence for us 'aliens'. (what a pejorative term!)

  • Thanks for the replies.
The info I'm looking for is along the line of insurance, registering here, possible importation fess etc, The meat and potatos of what issues arise.
    Life is never simple lol
  • Lots of folks, from Ontario leave their RV's here for the summer. They are registered in FL.
  • Probably not much help since I am at the other end of the country but we leave our 5th wheel that we purchased in AZ, got AZ plates and insurance. It was very easy but don't know about Florida and the fact that I assume that you did not purchase it in US could make things more complicated.

It is so nice not to have to worry about towing it back and forth. Good Luck.
