Anyone rv'd at cypress campground in winterhaven florida

My dh and I have been wintering in AZ for 4 years and have decided on florida next year as we are from upstate N.Y.I have been doing a lot of research and central florida is where we decided but finding a place we've never been is more difficult.Cypress campgrond sounds and looks good but has anyone been there?Any recommendations for other places in central florida? Thanks for your time and input.Trish
  • We stay there every time we go to Legoland (we've probably stayed there 3 or 4 times for a few nights) and my opinion is pretty much the same as the others. It's clean and it's nice enough but I don't think I'd stay the winter there.

As mentioned, it's quite tight for large rigs (we're 41' plus toad) and it's tricky to get to the site) and more importantly the sewer connection is really not good for us.

But because the location is convenient (it appears to be the nicest park within close proximity to Legoland) and the price is good, we keep going back. Also being next to the Wal-Mart is convenient (especially before when we didn't have a toad).
  • We did a 3 night stay early last March. I'd rate it a 6.5 out of 10. The individual sites are fairly generous compared to other parks we visited last winter. The one thing I didn't like, especially as short-termers was that many of the sewer connections were way to the back of the sites. You may need to add an extension pipe or hose, although I saw some sites with a better situation.

There are a few more permanent style RV set-ups, especially in the areas to the back of the park, but this park isn't loaded with a lot of park models as many other parks are. The roads are all paved and there is a security gate at the entrance. There is also cable TV. We didn't make a reservation for our stay and while we were there we saw a fair number of open sites, but I'd say it was at least 75% full.

There is a WalMart right next door and park residents/visitors just go out a side gate to the store for groceries and other needs. We're walkers, but some people use golf carts or bikes. On the other side of the park there is a side street leading back to homes and across that street is a small strip with a variety of retail establishments, some serving food, a beauty salon, as well as some other shops/stores. The park is located on a 4-lane divided road out front and there are plenty of businesses up and down US27 and also toward Winter Haven. It's not terribly far to Orlando either. We stayed there because we wanted to take in a Detroit Tiger spring game in Lakeland and had been staying in Sebring just prior to Cypress. BTW, the old Cypress Gardens isn't far from this park. It's now called LEGOLAND and is some kind of family park - we didn't go there, but drove by it.

Overall it's not a bad place and might give you a chance to explore the general area to search out other parks that might suit you better if this one doesn't work for you. We'd stay there again, but not for a long-term stay. We didn't really get to know any residents because we were on the go the whole time there, although we did walk each morning and folks out and about were nice. It was a bit cool when there so we didn't use the pool. Their activity center seemed to have people there for whatever during the mornings we walked by the building.

In regard to Olde Mill Stream, we went from Cypress to Olde Mill, and again, stayed for another 3 days. I liked Olde Mill a bit better than Cypress, but it was definitely more rural. There was shopping within a reasonable drive and we really enjoyed the small town of Mt. Dora which wasn't very far. The park itself, had more park models than Cypress and it's a bigger park too. There's an area with more trees and a newer area with fewer to no trees. There is also a no doggie portion, but dogs weren't an issue. The club house was nice, but not very large. There is a small lake next to the park. If we were thinking of a longer term stay we'd probably opt for Olde Mill.

As it is this season, we're still doing a bit more traveling around Florida checking out other parks, but did make month long reservation at Rock Crusher Canyon in Crystal River. We liked that area (the Nature Coast) and the rate wasn't bad for a month - $650. We have a week down at Riverside RV Park further south near Arcadia/Port Charlotte this year, but the monthly rates are quite high. We may want to do a warmer portion further south for the first part of our snowbirding trips and work our way north on the way back to Michigan. Not sure if we want to do a full winter season in just one park yet. This will only be our second season, doing 6 weeks last year and 2 months this year. Maybe longer next year as we start figuring out where we want to be.
  • I'm not familiar with that campground, but Winter Haven is a nice location, an easy commute to anywhere else you might want to go. We spent our first snowbird year exploring and making a list of other parks we'd like to stay at. The first year is definitely a learning year and it will take a while to find your groove. Hopefully the second year will be better

    Good luck!
  • We made reservations at Cypress but got delayed so didn't stay there. We did go by and check it out though and were glad we didn't end up there. The park is clean but older and sites are really tight if you have a big rig. We spent last January at Olde Mill Stream in Umatilla and going back for 3 months this year. Check out RV Park Reviews for places you might like. Olde Mill Stream is everything they advertise which is not always the case:)
