Blairsville, GA

Finishing our week here. We stayed at Trackrock Campground http://www.trackrock.com/index.html. Very nice cg and reasonable rates. Absolutely terrific mountain views filled with fall color.

We stopped at three new places this trip. One's The Old Schoolhouse Antique Mall just east of Dahlonega http://www.oldschoolhousemall.com/. Interesting place with some great vintage items. Larger and with the same setup was a great antique mall in Clarkesville, Ga http://www.oldclarkesvillemill.com/index.html.

The third place is a cabin furniture store on US 129 north of Blairsville called Rountrees Furniture. The furniture is either made on site or in Minnesota. This was DWs favorite. She's hinting for a new sofa for Christmas. Have to admit it was interesting to see the guy working on the furniture. Wife's favorite was the barn wood furniture. Look's like we'll be going back. http://rountreesfurniture.com/

I don't see why we need another sofa. The one we have is 48 years old and only needs 4 new springs. Sometimes it's baffling why we have to get a replacement when this one is finally broken in...emphasis on BROKEN. Herself has spoken: a new sofa it is for Christmas.
  • I have a former co worker who retired to Blairville. He has told me on more than one occasion that Trackrock is really nice. The pics they have on their web site look great but I would love to see some of the campsites. DW and I were talking about going somewhere next Oct to see the leaves change and maybe Trackrock will be the place.

Can you recommend some site #'s ?

I'd be interested in that too.

To me it's all good. Email or call the owner and tell them what kind of site you want. We had a site that would have been shaded in summer but of course the trees are shedding.

Call them and reserve now for next year. You can probably get them to send you an email photo or two. Very nice hosts with friendly staff. They make you feel as though you are an important paying customer unlike some cg owners.

Their leaf color peaks right around October 31-Nov 2. Of course that will vary a smidge from one year to the next as does any area. Leaf color intensity varies according to the spring and summer rainfall amounts and temps.
  • Track Rock is a clean campground located about 8 miles from Downtown. We haven't stayed there since 2011 but have visited every year. We like to stay on top where there are about 12 pull through sites that can take RV's up to 45'. We have since been staying in Blairsvillle across from the airport at Mountain View RV Resort which is closer to our friends and a great value, concrete pads, nice view, WI Fi 50 amp full hookup.. Of course, Vogel SP is close too.
  • Vogel, state park is also very nice. Hiking trails right in the park and the Appalachian Trail up,the road at Neels Gap. Richard Russell highway is also very nice..

Murphy NC about 30 miles from Vogel is also a nice town with shopping and restaurants. Murphy is about 30 minutes from the kayak finals of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics(Eric Rudolph, the Olympic bomber was caught in Murphy).....

Tons of outdoor things to do in this area

We normally stay at Vogel but they were full this year. Word has spread and in one sense I am glad as that means the park will be funded according to its visitor numbers. The flip side is the fact that it does make it harder to get reservations if you don't plan at least 10 months out.

We normally plan that far but sometimes we forget:W which is why we ended up at Trackrock this year as an alternative. It was a very nice stay at Trackrock and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Don't forget all of the waterfalls in that area too. The office at Vogel and Trackrock can tell you where they are.
  • We live near Blairsville. Trackrock is also a favorite for locals who just want to get away for the weekend or school breaks. Nice setting. DH & I drove thru the cg last season. We would probably stay up on the top area where the pull-thrus are.

Vogel is a great state park. When the g-kids are visiting, we like to take them there to run the trails - particularly the one around the lake. Then they're good & tuckered out!

We've also driven thru Mtn View. Nice, new park.

I believe that Mtn View and Trackrock are listed in Passport America so a few $ can be saved.

If you can't get in to any of the great cgs around Blairsville, go East on 76 to Hiawassee to the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds. This cg is located on Lake Chatuge. It can also fill up very fast - especially if a festival or a fair is going on. I'll include the web link for this one as the others have already been posted. http://www.georgiamountainfairgrounds.com/campgrounds.php

The peak leaf looking season in NE GA is over for this year. Today has still been full with the sun hitting singular trees that are bursting in bright golds or reds. So many have dropped their leaves and are stark lines on the horizon.

Do come visit NE GA! Lots of waterfalls, local crafts, festivals or just kick back and relax.
  • We've been going to Trackrock for at least 15 years, first as tenters and eventually with out TT and full hookups. This past summer I organized a family reunion up there and my siblings drove 9-10 hours all the way from lower Alabama, Mississippi, and the Outer Banks. One even flew in from Seattle, just to go to Trackrock!

They have a section in the back that is more suited to tents and pop-ups, with W/E. I've seen some other rigs in there, but it's tight. Most of the other sites are FHU. Some sites are a little uneven--it's on a mountain, after all, but nothing that's ever been too bad. I love site 70 the best. But we've been in 19, 10, 2, and 52 (and probably some I can't remember.)And like a PP said, they have a large area on the top of the mountain that is flat and works well for bigger rigs. Trackrock is a very popular place in the summer and fall. In fact, if you want to camp in October, you better have your reservations made by June.
