- GREGORYJExplorerWe camped at Greenbelt for 12 days last month and it was very good for $16/day.
No services on sites, but dump station/water fill and hot showers in washrooms,& 5+ miles of hiking trails.
It's a 30 minute walk to the Greenline train (or 5 minute drive) that takes you to downtown Washington for $2.05 senors rate and a 25 minute ride. - LantleyNomad

I try to cover a bunch of the local-to-DC options in this roundup:
Washington DC Campground Round Up
Nice list but a couple are just too far to be considered DC campgrounds. Ramblin pines and Patapsco are Metro Baltimore CG's and are not very convenient or concerned with DC.
You did include the nudist CG which may change someone's DC plans altogether. Duncan's has been sold but and is now called as Adventure Bound DC. - pioneerclaimsExplorerHave been a 'guest' of Cherry Hill now for just about a year, on a contract assignment to DHS. Great place, but a bit pricy.

- atreisExplorerGreenbelt National Park - inexpensive, nice, and very close to the Metro.

We stayed at the KOA in Millersville, Maryland three years ago. It's about a 20 or 25 minute drive into D.C. and a nice, wooded park. The campground is close to the metro and the park offers a shuttle that costs extra, but the cost to park at most attractions can be pretty expensive.

Everyone seems to point to Cherry Hill, but another VERY nice campground with easy access to the Metro is Fairfax County Park Campground. Click here. This is really a nice park, has lots to offer and even has the water park where you and the kids can spend a day easily.
This one is well worth considering.
There are a few others including ,Bull Run, Po hick Bay, Little Bennet. and Prince William Forest.
These are all decent spots that are generally cheaper than Cherry Hill. However none of them cater to tourist in the way Cherry Hill does. There is a Metro Bus stop in the CG. There are 2 subway stations close by. The staff is geared towards tourist.
If you want to work at it a bit the other CG's are worthwhile.
But they are not quite set up for the tourist crowd like Cherry Hill.
Cherry Hill is highly recommended as a base camp for touring DC for a reason. Catering to DC tourist is what they do! - DutchmenSportExplorerEveryone seems to point to Cherry Hill, but another VERY nice campground with easy access to the Metro is Fairfax County Park Campground. Close enough to drive into DC.
Well manage CG with decent amenities and a knowledgeable staff.
They are the go to choice for seeing DC.
