Camping Recommendations in WV off I77 near Charleston

We're going to be traveling through West Virginia along I77 from Blue Ridge Parkway up toward Akron / Cleveland. We'd like to stop along the way for an afternoon & night somewhere not too far off of I77. It looks like Charleston, WV would be about the 1/2 way point.

We had been planning to stay at Kanawah State Forest again, as we stayed there once 10 years ago and loved it. But after calling them to make our reservations, they have told us that our new camper is too big to get in. So now, we're stuck looking for a new campground.

We'd like something like a state park, CoE, or similar park, and prefer to have electricity. We'd love something in the mountains, with nice light hiking around.

Anyone have a good recommendation?
  • If you're wanting to stay near the Interstate, there's not much to choose from that matches your criteria close to Charleston. Farther south, Camp Creek and Pipestem are beautiful CG's that are easy access from I-77. If you are wanting to stay close to I-77, like someone else mentioned, Wolf Run State Park in Caldwell, Ohio is your next best choice (for a State Park kind of atmosphere). The Huntington/Milton KOA is a very nice CG (stayed there several times), but it is west of Charleston on I-64....which is at least a half hour out of your way (again..a nice facility, but not a "park" with trails, etc..) About a half hour north of Charleston is Rippling Waters CG (stayed there for a week)..very clean CG with a beautiful lake (We stayed in the paved, full-hookup section on the right side of the CG map). This CG is pretty close to I-77.

Unfortunately, although WV has a ton of awesome CG's, there aren't many near the state capital. Good luck and happy camping!!!
  • I am looking for a campground where I can stay for 13 weeks. I am a travel nurse and need something within 25-35 miles from Charleston. I need electric and water hookups. I will be headed that way on 7/24/13 and will need a place by 7/26 until 10/28/13. I have a 1977 holiday ambler 32ft. Please help!! :) Thanks in advance.

  • Lake Summersville Corps of Engineers park is on US 19 northeast of I-77.
There is a small city campground in St Albans. 15 amp. Check it out on www.rvparkreviews.com
Also Huntington-Fox Fire KOA at Milton WV is sort of near Charleston. Note directions for big rigs as there is a sharp turn coming from the other direction!!
  • Charleston and the Kanawah State Forest, as a half-way point is a little short or a little long. Government options are, Lake Stephens, a Raleigh county park about 9 miles west of Beckley or the Exhibition Coal Mine campground, a Beckley city park on Ewart Ave. Further past Charleston, next closest SP to I-77 would be Wolf Run SP in Caldwell, OH.

Anytime I get near to the NEW RIVER GORGE near Fayetteville WV on US19 I will surely plan on going to see it. There is a couple of camp ground is the area with a great view of the high bridge going over the gorge.

    Truly a sight to see

I'd have to look up the camp ground names that is close by to this area.
