Cherrystone Campground

We hated it...way too hectic for us. Crowded, tight, noisy, lots of parents running around trying to find their 15 year old sons and daughters who were trying to ditch their parents.

Well, you get the picture...but since basically that's what you are looking for, I highly recommend it.

Seriously, have a good trip. It just wasn't our style, but lots of folks seemed to be having lots of fun. Kind of reminded us of camping at a Chucky Cheese.

Been 12 yrs since we have been Cherrystone, at the time our boys were 11 & 12 and we all had a blast... It was one of our best family trips. Since then I have read the campground has expanded even more. And just as you posted, at the time we didn't mind the "hecticness" either. I say go for it! :C

You could also try Kiptopeke State park. Full hookups and nice beach.Take a day trip to Chincoteague where you can bicycle on paved trails and see the wild ponies.They also have some decent restaurants and 2 ice cream shops.On your way in or out stop at Wallops Island.It's part of NASA and have some nice displays on our space program.

X2 LOL same here. Teenagers will love it there. Plenty of space to run or bike away from parents. My kids had a blast when they were in their teens, and I was lucky they came back to the site every night.:B

We have been going to Cherrystone for 15 years, and my wife's family for over 45 years, We use to always go the week before and including Labor day weekend, Several years ago they started allowing all the personal tricked out golf carts, which is fine but there were kids driving them like crazy with no concept that they are driving something that can easily hurt someone. At night the lights on the carts were so bright you couldn't enjoy the campfire. Plus there were so many different kinds of music being played very loudly that, as a musician, it drove me nuts! This would all start the Thursday before Labor Day, so we came up with a solution, We went the third week of August and all our issues were solved! We do love Cherrystone, the location is awesome, the staff for the most part is friendly, The Little Neck Café has good food, there is a well stocked store. We enjoy our week at Cherrystone, just don't like going over holiday weekends.

There is a big elephant in Cherrystone's room and it's name is the Sunset Beach RV resort right down the road at the bridge tunnel. It has been sold and is being remade into a 300 site behemoth of a nice place. It will reopen this summer.
We have vowed to never darken Cherrystone's door again, ruder staff you have never met.

As the OP, we are really on the fence about this place. Sort of sounds like a Va. Ocean Lakes. But we like Ocean Lakes. Only thing is, this August will be our first Ocean Lakes trip during the summer months.

For now, we have decided to pass on Cherrystone for a little while. We were debating a trip in May but the water will be far too cold anyway so we're just staying local at a state park we really enjoy. We still may do Cherrystone this year. Possibly July. But they may be booked up by then. Lots of other choices if that's the case.

Mid August is a great time to camp at Cherrystone, It's a lot slower then July and the holiday weekends, For the most part when we spend a week at Cherrystone in Mid August it's very slow Sunday through Thursday, and only moderately busy Friday and Saturday.

cherrystone when we went was just a crowded hectic pit of a place.
(our opinion of course, others will vary, but it was about 6 years ago...did they improve, well the sites I am sure didn't change and they were not big, grunge type and some angled strange...ugh.)

We used to go until a rain storm and it overflowed the septic system and flowed sewerage all over the sites. Their answer was to throw some lime around. It also temporarily polluted their water and everyone was on their own to purchase bottled water. A couple of years ago a tornado went directly through the campground killing a family.
