we would like to make the trip from cincinnati to maine. never been up the east coast before so iam asking for campground ideas along the way. and things to see and do. i know this is a wide range but asking anyway

Unless I wanted to see something particular in the area, I would avoid CT/MA/RI and 84 or 95 like the plague. Run 84 out of PA over to 87 and up the Hudson valley to the Albany or Troy area, then cut across the two lanes through VT and NH to Maine. Plenty of nice options for overnights or staying a few days along those routes, and its all awesome country without the aggravating traffic dealt with further South..........

OP, which way are you planning on taking? jcsb gave you some good ideas if going thru PA. Besides 90 in NY, you have 86 which runs along the NY/PA border. In Binghamton, pick up I-88 to Albany. Once thru Alb, sadly, it becomes a toll road rest of the way. FWIW, you can calculate the toll amount for NY anyways by going to the NYS Thruway website and under "calculate toll", you enter your info. Several CG's along the T-way. Last one is x33, Verona,Turning Stone. To the best of my knowledge, nothing right on the T-way rest of way to MA. May be some a short bit off tho. But will help us to help you if you know which way you want to go.

We get to family south of boston most years and into maine to visit friends also.

I 71 north to 76 to 80 into PA. 90 is all toll road thru NY and MA.

We stop inside OH for fuel fill up as PA is usually more expensive. Usually we stay at a campground about and hour or so into PA.

We continue on 80 until we get to Schroudsburg (sic) and take 209 thru Deleware Water Gap Rec area. From there we pick up I 84 into Conn.

At the last exit in PA there is a nice campground on the river. We cross into NY the next morning and get off the first exit for fuel. If you take a left at the exit you are in Deleware and gas is low, vs PA or NY.

You will be in NY for about an hour or so before getting into Conn. Stay on 84 till SE of Hartford and pick up a beltway around the S of Hartford before picking up I95. Staying on 84 will take your thru the center of Hartford and that can be a challenge. You will pick up Conn 15 north and then on to I90 (toll) in MA into boston area.

Pick up I 495 beltway to go around boston then 91 north into NH and Maine.

Note MA toll road is exclusively electronic or license plate and billing. Tolls also went up this last year.

Go to Cleveland and take I-90 East. You can go all the way to Boston and take I-495 North to I-95 North.If you don't have your passports you will have to turn around at Houlton Maine.

Gas Buddy You can download it from your app store. Find cheap gas and you can record your gas/fuel expenses. You can look ahead and see what the prices are where you are headed . It helps plan fuel stops.

NPS you can look up things to see/points of interest. https://www.nps.gov/index.htm
You can also see what campgrounds are available in the different parks.
Also look at getting a pass and if you are 62 or older definitely get a Senior Pass it is a $10 Lifetime pass that covers everyone in your car. https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm
You may have to wait till you get to your first park they have a great way to record the parks you have ben to. It is called a Passport, you buy it in the visitor’s center, it kind of looks like a Passport but you add stickers and stamp the date and time you were at the park.
One other thing you need is get a Passport America discount card. This is a tool to help campgrounds fill empty spots during the week or slow times. Each campground sets the time and discount but most times it is 50% and some places 3-4 days.
