Clarksville TN

Thanks for looking.

I am trying to decide where to stay in Clarksville TN for a month. I keep seeing mixed reviews between only two possible parks, Fletchers Fork and Clarksville RV Park and Campground.

To sum it up, I believe...

Fletchers Fork (Military Campground) has small spaces and nearly zero cell coverage. On the plus side, it is wooded and has lots of trails to walk / run / ride a bike.

Clarksville RV Park and Campground has nearly zero ascetic appeal (next to a working junk yard) and lots of highway noise. That said, it has strong wifi and larger sites.

I am staying a month, in my signature rig, because I am teaching a course on Fort Campbell and will have my family (wife, 2 daughters 11 and 13) for a week at the beginning and a week at the end of the trip.

My question is this: Which would you prefer and why? Does anyone have any personal pictures of either campground?
  • The bridge is a wooden single lane bridge, but I have seen many big coaches staying at the lower campground across the bridge. There is an upper campground that is more wooded where I stayed a couple of years ago in my 5th wheel when I PCS'd back to Campbell. There is a way around the bridge by taking Jordan Springs and approaching the bridge from the other direction, but I wouldn't worry about it.

There is another option at 830 Tiny Town rd. I believe it's called Tiny Town TV Park. I've seen quite a few nice rigs parked there for extended time, but looks to be many open pads right now. It is not too far off Tiny Town, so there would be road noise, but more convenient for shopping and it is close to gate 3. Forgot to add their number is 931-217-3363.

    Good luck with your trip.
  • Thanks All!

I will stay at the civilian campground. A couple of posters have made the point that because this is really about work, I should probably put connectivity higher on the list of "must have".

My biggest concern about the park in Clarksville was safety and its proximity to an active junk yard. I am good with noise. After 28 years in the Army, rifle, shotgun fire, and helicopters can lull me to sleep!

My other concern with the Military campground is the weight limit on the bridge. I was "told" the sign was put up to stop commercial truck traffic as opposed to an actual weight limit. That said, I *don't* want to be that guy who collapses a bridge! I would have preferred to stay on post (old habits), but the lack of signal will really cramp my ability to communicate.

    Thanks again!
  • PS.. read one review on www.militarycampgrounds.us and it mentions a weight limit bridge?? Also lots of noise from skeet shooting range and helicopters. I would go with Clarksville RV Park. We have stayed there twice for overnights and it's fine. We didn't notice any noise from the junk yard. It's near shopping and restaurants.
  • If there is cell service at all, you could get a Wilson Sleek to boost the signal and be fine at Fletchers Fork. Wilson Sleek at walmart.com is about $100.
  • To get to Fletcher you use to have to go over a 9 ton limit bridge. If you're still traveling in the rig in your sig line then you're going to be well over the 9 ton limit.
We've stayed at Clarksville RV several times over the years. Americanrascal described it well. The hosts have always been friendly and helpful.
  • I stayed at the RV park with friends as they welcomed their son's company home to Fort Campbell from Afghanistan. It was fine for that or an overnight stop on the way to somewhere else. Clarksville would be just another small town if not for Ft. Campbell. Its 20 miles wide and extends into both Kentucky and Tennessee. (The Fort - not the RV park).
  • For work I'd take the better mobile coverage. If on vacation I'd go for the esthetics of nature trail and woods.

My suggestion: Since you're working for a month stay at Clarksville RV Park (better mobile coverage) and use it as a base camp to sight-see with family on your days off.
  • We stay at Clarksville RV park several times a year when we visit our SIL and daughter. Its a nice park, very well maintained and laid out. WIFI is good but no cable- but off air isn't bad. Pool was just rebuilt.

Very handy to Clarksville, the base and the interstate. The campground is a pretty busy and well liked place.

We have rarely noticed any impact from the salvage yard as it is pretty well screened-- occasionally a bit during daylight hours. There is more noise form the interstate than the salvage yard. Salvage yard is shut down on Sundays and every evening.

Can't speak to the military park
  • Take the wooded area, and find out if a local cell phone will work. We have AT&T, but bought a cheap Walmart phone once because it had local service and AT&T didn't.
  • Unless I had a real "need" for cell phone coverage, I'd take the wooded area. However, if you are working while there, you may need the phone coverage to keep contact with your "employer". Things happen, and your job comes first.

For me, I'd take the wooded area, but I would not be there for a work opportunity, I'd be there to get AWAY from work!
