East Canada

We are going in mid October to Niagra. After that we can spend a few days wandering. My original idea was heading west out of Niagra through Canada to Detroit to go through the Ford plant. Does anyone have better ideas for scenery, maybe heading east along Lake Ontario or something like that? Thanks, Mike

Sorry, I think I put this in the wrong spot.

They offer 2 Campground/Museum Packages as well. You can easily spend a couple of days there. The museum is big enough inside to hold a few full size steam locomotives as well as several official Presidential Limos. And Greenfield Village is set up as a village to walk thru, with actual historical buildings, like the real Wright Bros. Bicycle Shop. BTW, Ol' Henry was an RVer.

Just keep in mind that Camp Dearborn (full hook up sites) is about 40 miles from Greenfield Village.
We camp at Camp Dearborn every July.
  • The starting point for the Ford tours is also at Greenfield Village area. We used to have membership there for the family and went often. There are so many things to see you could spend weeks there. Your choices for a CG are either the Sterling State Park in Monroe or the CG in Ypsilanti, MI. The state park has some full hookup sites and sits out in Lake Erie. Henry Ford's camping buddies were Thomas Edison, Firestone, and the President at the time. BTW you are a long way from Eastern Canada at Niagara Falls. There is Quebec, New Bruswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, and New Foundland, all East of there.
  • You will need passports to get back into the US from Canada. A driver's license or a birth certificate will no longer suffice. Also, be sure you are not carrying any thing prohibited when entering Canada, they have very little sense of humor in this matter. But be sure to stop at the Duty Free Store.

Entering the US from Canada in Detroit is always a PITA, but there is little you can do but answer the questions and smile.

Believe everything they say about the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Set up the time to do it right (at least two days) if you are not planning to come this way again.

If you are going to cross the Welland Canal, go to http://www.marinetraffic.com and point it at the Welland (just east of the Niagara River) and set up to see a ship or two lock though. The lock just south of the 405 has a visitor center, but there is usually someplace you can park to watch just about any lock.

  • The Oakville Ford plant does not routinely give tours. Spend the extra day going up and down the Niagara Parkway from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Fort Erie, excellent scenery and lots of historical sites.Niagara Parkway
Then as cocos cabana said, take Hy 3 west to Detroit.

  • Having lived many years on the Ontario side of Lake Erie, I would recommend taking highway 3 thru the agricultural lands of the "Banana Belt" of Ontario. Many interesting older towns and museums. Cross the Welland canal lift bridge. See an old fishing village of Port Dover. Tobacco museum in Delhi. St. Thomas old rail town. Leamington for vegetable processing plants. Very scenic drive.

  • Tom, the Village looks really cool. The pic of the mod t reminded me of a story told to me about my grandfather, who I never had the pleasure to know. It was either the model a or t, which ever came second. When he first saw the window in the rear, "well, guess they've done about all they can with them". Thanks for the tip!!!!!
