Ethridge,Tn

My wife and I will be up in this area in a couple weeks camping at David Crockett state park. I was wondering if anyone has every visited this town. It is supose to be the largest Amish community in the southeast. If anybody has what are your thought on it and anyplace in particular to visit there. Thanks in advance
  • Thank you that is some very good info we will definitely have to check it out
  • Having lived around that area most of our lives, we can recommend a visit. One IMPORTANT word though, Be VERY careful about the speed limits and traffic regulations in that area. It has been well-known for many, many years for its law-enforcement and money-raising methods. Be warned, and Aware!! Enjoy!
  • Remember, Seat-belts, brake lights, ad turn signals are also big factors in the local economy there.
  • Camped at Davy Crockett State Park 3 times this year.
Not that much to see at the Amish, we drive through the community a couple times a year. They have produce for sale along with some other things. You see a lot in their buggies and see somewhat of the lifestyle by driving through.
If you like good brisket to eat go to Shaffer Farms north of town, a few miles out. It is great! The brisket sandwich is worth the trip, believe me on this one.
They are in the process of working on the campgrounds, one is closed during Nov. and Dec and the other will close in the spring for work. You might want to check their web site about this.
    Several nice antique shops downtown.
  • @DannyA yea they are working on campground 1 this month we will be in campground 2 site 87. We are looking forward to some nice relaxing time. We will have to try out the place your talking about. Thanks for all the replies
  • Agree you must go to Shaffer's for Brisket!

If you've ever been to Amish Country in Ohio or elsewhere you may be disappointed in Ethridge.

Lawrenceburg town square has a few cute antique stores and a great little sandwich shop, Yum.
  • Personally we preferred Ethridge to the larger Amish locales. A lot less tourist traffic in Ethridge and the Amish don't feel so rushed that they can't take the time to chat with you :c

If you're there to be able to talk with Amish about their culture, Ethridge is the right place. If you only want to shop, I recommend the tourist oriented OH and PA settlements.
  • I think you will enjoy it. You will have to seek out the Amish. For the most part, they have signs on the mailboxes stating what they sell. You need to drive up the driveway, get out and start toward their out buildings. The goods they sell are usually not in the house, although occasionally some were on a back porch.

We were there in September and they did not mind us walking in the wood work shops, leather shops and others but if you just drive by, you will not see much.
