Favorite things to do at skidaway state park

We will be staying at the above state park mid December. This will be our second trip to savannah, GA. WHat are your favorite things to do at/near the park. Also, what did you enjoy doing at or near Savannaha.

So much to do! Be advised, though, that it's a bit of a trek from Skidaway to Savannah proper. Not a problem, but work a bit of travel time into your plans.
    • In Savannah itself, my favorite things are: Just walking around the city, seeing the historic district, the parks, and cemeteries. My favorite stops are the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Bonaventure Cemetery, River Street, Colonial Park Cemetery, Lafayette Square, etc. etc. etc. You get the idea.
    • On Tybee Island, Fort Pulaski and the lighthouses are fun. Plus there are several great beaches and a fun marine center.
    • St. Simons, Sea Island, Jekyll Island, etc., are all great for touring around, especially if you like marshes and tidal areas. I can't remember the exact statistic, but coastal Georgia contains something like 1/3 of all the marshlands in the eastern portion of the U.S. There's also a great sea turtle center on Jekyll Island.
    • It would be a bit of a haul (about an hour), but if you're into American history, a visit to Darien is worth it. The burning and looting of that undefended city, with no strategic importance, was one of the low points in American history and worth remembering. (The event was depicted, more or less accurately, in the movie Glory.) Besides that, Darien is a charming little town and a great stop for lunch by the river.
Have fun! As you can tell, I love coastal Georgia.

  • In addition to the previously mentioned:
Check out the old movie "Garden of Good and Evil". The home featured in that movie can be toured while there.

We only found one restaurant close to the campground. Turn left exiting the campground and it will a couple of miles (I think) on your left. Food there was pretty good but not like Savannah restaurants. There is a grocery etc there also.
  • I don't know your preferences for things to do and there's a huge variety in Savannah.

We liked the Christmas lights events in Savannah also historic tours. We simply enjoyed the campground too.
  • Skidaway is possibly our favorite state park campground. Sites are very large, and the Live Oaks draped with Spanish Moss make it very attractive. As for things to do in the immediate area, there isn't a lot. As JayGee mentioned, there is a good grocery within a mile or less, turning left off of the park road. We didn't find this any sort of distraction though, as the drive into Savannah and/or Tybee Island is not too long and the quality of the camping more than made up for it.

As for things to do in the area, Savannah is a great city to visit with all kinds of things to see and do. In this case, Trip Advisor is your best friend. If you haven't downloaded the app onto your Apple or Android device, get it. It's free and chock full of good information. Having said this, a few of the things we enjoyed were...

1 - Shopping on River Street. Fun places to browse, really good restaurants, and you get to see close-up the huge container ships coming down the Savannah river towards the port.

2 - Walking through the many squares spaced throughout the old city of Savannah.

3 - Consider taking a food tour. These are guide-led 2 or 3 hour walking tours between 5 or so of the best local restaurants in town. You'll get an appetizer-sized portion of food at each establishment, along with a bit of the history of the town during your walks. When you're done with the tour, you will NOT be hungry, and you'll likely find a restaurant or two that you'll want to revisit on your own. Cost is in the area of $45 to $50 per person.

4 - Don't know what the weather is like on Tybee Island in December, but if it's warm and you head in that direction, but sure to stop at the Crab Shack for lunch or dinner. Seating is outdoors in a really kitschy setting, so do this only if it's reasonably warm. There may be some indoor seating as well, but I'm not sure of that. The food is really good.

If/when you drive into town, be aware that parking can be a challenge. We ended up parking in one of the downtown parking garages which can fill up very quickly during the weekdays. Cost is around $15.00/day.

Hope this helps. Savannah is one of our favorite places.

    Enjoy... Bill
  • Everyone hit on all the main things we like to do when down there. We love Tybee...the beach and the various eating places.
  • Tybee Island - if you like seafood and lots of it, visit the Crab Shack. If you leave hungry it's your own fault.
