First Family Vacation in the Truck Camper

My wife and I just started planning our first family vacation, which I define as anything greater than a long weekend. We have decided to venture to Huntington Beach, SC for three nights from April 17th-19th. We live in Ohio, and since we are all about the journey and not the destination, we are going to make one stop along the way to keep from driving the entire ten hours in one day.

Greystone RV Park is located in North Carolina between Mt Airy and Winston-Salem. It has a total of ten campsites that each overlook Pilot Mountain to the west. It's a little pricey at $48 per night, but we are only going to be there for one night and I don't mind paying a few more dollars to be secluded. Hopefully those travelling in their six figure diesel pushers won't look down upon me in my 13 year old truck. The 2016 Northern-Lite in the bed of it might help with that though.

Huntington Beach State Park will be our beach destination and also the first time our four year old daughter will go to the beach. We intentionally chose mid-April to stay this side if the hot/humid weather and the 'schools out' crowds. Should make for an enjoyable time. From there we head down to Charleston to spend at least one night, maybe two with my wife's friend from college.

This is as far as we got so far. We still need to decide what we want to see and/or where we want to stop between Charleston and central Ohio as we make our way back home. Looking at the map, it looks like Wytheville would be at our near the halfway point to home, so any recommendations for where to stay in or around that area would be great.

Thanks - Tim
  • 40+ years ago we borrowed the neighbors cabover camper to join our young son on a Boy Scout encampment. My wife, our daughter who is 18 months younger, and our new-born daughter drove a rather short distance to the Will Rogers State Beach for the family encampment. Our first RV trip, and the rest is history.
Enjoy, and make wonderful memories. There are no Jones' to keep up with, no one will look down on you. You will see very expensive RVs, campers, truck campers, soft-sided campers, and tents. Come to think of it, we did have some great tent trips with the kids also.
Don't push your driving, the travel is part of the vacation. Expect something to go wrong, it almost always does, but it is just part of the adventure. You will find if you have a problem with your first camping trip there are plenty of fellow campers who will gladly help.
    Have a good time.
    Happy Trails.

We've stayed at the Wytheville KOA a few times on our way up to and back from Maine. It's a good overnight stop. They have a pool and a large rec hall that may help keep the little one occupied.
