Bar Harbor And Mount Desert Island Are Open For Business

Dear Friend,

I wanted to send you a quick note to update you on the impacts of the recent government shutdown. Despite the dysfunction currently taking place in Washington, D.C., Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island remain open for business. The government shutdown which has closed Acadia National Park has shown visitors that there is much more to do and see on Mount Desert Island.

While Acadia National Park is one of our featured attractions, there are so many other things to enjoy in Bar Harbor and on Mount Desert Island. This is a wonderful time to visit Bar Harbor. The area's brilliant fall foliage will be at its peak over the next few weeks, businesses are open, and there are many ways to enjoy some of Maine's most beautiful coastline.

It is still possible for you to enjoy our fall foliage from one of the many boat tours, whale watches, and scenic air tours. There are historic walking tours, wine-tasting and brewery tours, museums, bicycle tours, golf, and unique retail stores for you to continue to enjoy. As you may know, Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island are also home to some of the finest restaurants in the U.S. featuring fresh seafood including world-renowned Maine lobster. There are lodging properties ranging from upscale 4-diamond hotels and inns to family-run motels and cottages who often offer affordable seasonal rates. If you currently hold reservations, you can be assured of a memorable experience.

We are disappointed to be caught up in the wash of this political standoff and we encourage the Congress and President Obama to work together to resolve it. Perhaps they need to get out of the DC environment and summit in Bar Harbor to get some perspective on what is really important, we'd certainly be happy to host them. In the meantime, we're going to get on with the business of what we do best which is providing you an excellent and memorable visitor experience.

For those of you who may be inclined to interpret this a political message, please know that it is not. Our only hope is that however this situation resolves itself, it happens soon. We really enjoy sharing this place we all care so much about with you.

I personally want to thank you for your business over the years and I'd like to send a special thanks to all of you who have shared your experiences and kind words with me. Your notes mean a lot. We hope to see you soon.

While I agree Acadia is a destination in itself, there is so much more to do in the area, even this time of year. We are heading up in a few weeks no matter what the government does. Sometimes you have to think outside the box.
  • We are coming, but not until next June. Hopefully this madness will have passed by then.........
  • We got back to VT from Acadia yesterday. The foliage along RT 2 in Maine and NH was BRILLIANT - the best we've seen up here in 45 years! The Northeast Kingdom is way past peak. All the roads in Acadia are closed, but folks are accessing the trails and hiking the Carriage Roads by parking large numbers of vehicles at points on public roads that intersect the park. On October 1st campers at the Park CGs were given 48 hours to leave, and half the bathrooms were shut down. We were at a private CG and saw no bump in camper numbers. The 2000 cruise ship passengers that are normally bused around the island are milling around Bar Harbor. There seems to be plenty of room in the private CGs, but most of them as well as many restaurants and attractions shut down on Columbus Day.
  • The local newspapers in Bar Harbor said the Chamber of Commerce would be having a big push to encourage tourists. Many businesses were hurt when the park and the loop road opened late this year due to the budget. Now they expect to be hurting again.

The Island Explorer free busses are still running, except through the park and there are many nice "leaf peeping" spots ouside the park.

My wife and I are still planning to go back to Bar Harbor next week because we had such a good time there last Fall.
  • I wish I could get out there and see the upcoming fall color on the eastern seaboard. Maybe in another 15 years....
