Its snowbird season! I have an ad for my rental lots in Florida on RVparkstore.com I got an inquiry through the site about one of my lots. I quoted the person a monthly rate even though they only provided the email address of "findoutmayers@gmail.com"They immediately accepted for a 6 month term and told me to book it so they dont lose it. They asked me to let them know when the payment arrived. In return I asked them to fill out a form that I have to turn into the resort office about who is coming. They did not respond. A few days later I sent the form again and again asked that it be filled out. No response. several days later I received and email from them stating that the payment had been sent and would deliver today and to let them know I got it. Since they have issues responding to my requests I did not respond at all. The next day they asked why I did not respond and I told them why. I then tracked the mail they claim to have sent to me as now they have included a tracking number. It should it was addressed wrong and was being returned. I told them no big deal, just pay me when you arrive. no response, I asked them to call me and no response.I believe they were trying to do a "deposit" scam on me. If you deposit a check into your account the sender of the check will have access to your account numbers.So beware out there.

I understand the scam on giving more than asked, and then asking us to send them the difference, but I haven't heard of the "deposit scam" how does it work?

Has something to do with checks that are processed via ACH, then they can get in and make withdrawals.

It used to be that when you sent a physical check the account number it was deposited to was MICRed at the bottom next to your account number.You then had the depositors account number.I used that against my ex-wife as I wanted to grab the money she owed me out of her account. My lawyer sent her a small check stating "it had to do with the divorce proceedings". When she cashed it he had the account number to put a lien on.

When I had an account with Wells Fargo and selling hay nationwide Wells Fargo let me open a totally separate account not associated with my other accounts. $25 to open the acct. Money could be deposited in the account. Withdrawals in person with I.D. only. I didn't have to worry about anyone getting into my acct. They would deposit. Once deposited and final I withdrew money before shipping product.

I wonder how scammers sleep at night or look themselves in the mirror?

SIGH. In this country, you are not guilty of a felony unless and until you are prosecuted and convicted.

In this case, the State has to convince a Judge or Jury that you KNEW the check was bad when you deposited it. That's pretty difficult to do in most cases. And in most cases like being discussed here, it is NOT true. Stupidity is not a felony, unfortunately.

Yes it DOES. If "they" are an authorized ACH processor.

I have asked two banks in two different states if I have to specifically give an ACH processor permission to withdraw money from my account; the answer: NO.

Thankfully most companies/people who attain ACH processor status are legit; some are not so much.

An time I am dealing with somebody who I do not trust, (and yes I agree that that includes Sirius/XM.) I go online and create a temporary credit card on my normal CC account. This creates a throw away card number, with a dollar limit and and short term expiration date, specifically for these kinds of transactions.

It's kind of funny to hear from Sirius at the end of my contract. "well sir, your card was denied" me: "yes it was, you are not authorized to do an automatic renew, yet you tried anyway, and failed". Them: "well sir, we can update your account today, and you won't lose service". Me: " that's great, as I recall it came out to about seven bucks a month, right"

Then it gets entertaining, since they were attempting to double or triple that amount with the auto renew.

Because the state's attorney where I live thought differently when they tried to prosecute me. Been there done that saw it first hand.

And it's right in the statement you made.
I KNEW the check was going to be deposited.
I PROVIDED the routing numbers for deposit.

As does everyone who decides to take payment via direct deposit. Which is fine until you run across a counterfeit check.

That's all the evidence they need.

Ton of case law on people who were prosecuted, albeit they were scammed....or said they were scammed.:W

Come on folks, any time you write a check to someone, they get your account number and routing info, it's on the check.
All that is is an address in the banking system.
Does not give anyone access to our account.

We have lots for rent and I rarely deposit the actual check. I use my online banking, scan the check and then I have the original check. I wonder if they have my account info when they get the copy?
