When we were in Yellowstone two weeks ago, the campers next to us recommended Myrtle Beach State Park in South Carolina. I checked out their website, they do offer full hook-ups. I could not find any posts on this forum that specifically mention this CG? All the site photographs look like gray sand and pine tree's. We have two children, ages 12 and 9.If you had stayed there, would you recommended it for a family vacation spot?We are debating between Myrtle Beach and the Outer Banks for next summers trip.

There are several well liked camp grounds along the BUS US17 S. Kings Highway strip along the beach of Myrtle Beach.One just south of the Myrtle Beach State Park is a place called PIRATE LAND CAMPGROUND which is really geared towards the kids..We usually stay at the next campground south called LAKEWOOD RESORT mainly because my sister is staying there in permanent housing.About the only thing I didn't like about the Myrtle Beach State park and the next SPRINGMAID Hotel is these are in the final approach for the Myrtle beach Airport which is just across the road from BUS US17. You can actually see the pilots inside the aircraft when it is landing. Most of the the time they make this a landing event for noise abatement but sometimes I guess they are forced to take OFF in the direction of the Ocean which is very loud when that occurs.Pirate Land and Lakewood are far enough south to get away from the real loud noise with aircraft.The next campground south of LAKEWOOD is OCEAN LAKES FAMILY CAMPGROUND which is another well known facility with kids in mind...On down the SOUTH US17 road just a few miles is another State Park called HUNTINGTON BEACH STATE PARK at Murrells Inlet which is one I really want to stay at on one my future visits down that way. It also has BEACHFRONT CAMPING or back in the woods off to yourself somewhat. This is a hugh piece of land.We have camped alot in both areas of NC OUTER BANKS and Myrtle Beach and it really depends of what you want to do. NC outer bank is more beach type atmosphere where Myrtle Beach has both beaches and a really nice town with all of its amenities.Hard to say which place is better... I suspect the kids will fall in love with Myrtle beach.Roy Ken

We stay at Myrtle Beach Travel Park every spring - Great beach, activities for your children, 3 pools, all pull through sites.We have stayed at Camp Hatteras when we were at the outer banks - in 2009.In the fall of 2009 we stayed at the outer banks first and then went down to Myrtle Beach.

We really enjoyed it when we stayed there last year. We prefer state parks and wooded campsites, so MBSP was more to our liking that the other "resorts". I will say that the airstrip did create some noise, but nothing to make us regret our choice. The staff was very friendly, the lots were decent sized (especially compared to the "resorts"), and the beach was just a short walk away in the State Park. I have also read good things about Huntington Beach State Park a little south of Myrtle Beach.Hope this helps with your decision.Doug

Hi cubmaster,I felt compelled to comment based on your " handle". I'm the mother of three eagle scouts, who love to tell me that What I do in my 5th wheel is not camping!! Whatever!!Anyway, the only place we have camped at Myrtle Beach is the State Park. As you could see from the pics, I say its like camping at the mountains ( with the trees) and the beach at the same time. The beach is just beautiful and you really feel removed from the craziness of the Grand Strand. The mini golf and restaurants are convenient and honestly it is close to the airport, but as someone else said - never created an issue for us. I have never heard a bad comment about Myrtle Beach Travel Park for what its worth. Use your judgement.We just went to OBX for first time this year. I would say a little too sleepy for children the age of yours. Vacation should be fun for them too! All the best!

we find apache is to our likeing, been round 10/12 yrs now. keep comeing back. now its all happy-camping

I have spent a number of vacation weeks on the Outer Banks. To us it is the best. It is a wonderful family location with a lot to do. Cape Hatteras KOA is great with lots of attractions for the kids. Nearly all the facilities are new as they have rebuilt them since the 2011 storms.

We just got back from Huntington Beach State Park. It is south of Myrtle Beach and away from the main traffic congestion. Yes, the grounds are big, and the beach adjacent to the campground had very few people on it most days we were out there. Has a causeway for spotting gators, a gift shop, and a historical home on site that is open for tours. Only real negative we experienced was sugar ants. The beach was free and the water was warm.

Traveling all the way from Ohio?. Would you like to be close to the waves and the beach? Do you want to have a lot of available activities for the kids?
Myrtle Beach travel park and Ocean Lakes are nice and you can get sites steps from the beach. Both places have great activities for the young ones.

At the Outer Banks, you have a choice of Camp Hatteras, Hatteras KOA and Ocean Waves CG. These are also on the ocean, Camp Hatteras has sound front sites also.

Both areas are great locations. The Outer Banks CG,s are no where near congested like the large Myrtle Beach CG's.

You have time to do research to see what area you prefer and what surrounding sites would be of interest. Just reserve early should you decide on a site close to the beach. I have been at MBSP, which is very nice, but I want to be close to the beach. Nothing like a fresh cup off coffee and an ocean front sunrise to start your day. Safe travels.

One of the things about MBSP that has kept us from there besides he airport which is actually less than a mile away, is snakes. I've not been here but have heard that they have it posted about snakes there and have read where people have stepped out of their rig and there be a snake right here.

I also know someone who did overnight security there (retiree from my work place). He has told me some unfavorable stories of some things that go on there at night. I'm sure it happens all over here at myrtle beach. I have not seen it, but also have not been told about it by anyone that works in those places, either.

MBSP is a real nice place, full hookups you will probably need to book way in advance. Some sites are tight, not sure how big your trailer is. We stayed at the Myrtle Beach Family Campground lots to do, but they pack a lot of trailers in there.

I agree with Botts. I've stayed in both HBSP and MBSP, before they extended the airport runway. They're both nice, but it depends on your tolerance for jets taking off at MB airport, about one mile from the end of the runway. If that isn't your idea of fun, HBSP is your best bet.

We prefer Huntington Beach SP about 14 miles south of MBSP. They also have full hook up sites. A bigger park and a little easier to get into the sites.

I agree. Huntington is the nicer park. and also a bit more quiet compared to the MB commotion. we stayed a Pirate Land and it was nice. it is basically 2 doors down from MB state park. we never had an airplane problem the 5 days we were there. We did a trip to Huntington and it was beautiful! My daughter loved finding seashells. it is supposed to be one of the nicest "shelling" beaches around!

We did not camp at Myrtle Beach State Park but we spent a day there and I walked through the entire campground. It was lovely. I would not hesitate to stay there or recommend it. We stayed at the Myrtle Beach KOA and were very pleased. Nice pool, fun stuff for kids, and fairly spacious pull thrus. It is two blocks from the beach but feels a world away.

Both of those places are awesome as far as I am concerned. Here are blog posts that I wrote on each of these locations with pictures etc.. Of course, the Outer Banks is awesome too!

We stay at ocean lakes a few months every year and have stayed at both state parks also. I think I like Huntington Beach state park better then Myrtle Beach state park because there is much more space to roam around.
