Next spring: OR coast

Been quite a few years since we've headed south down the coast. Am I going to need OR SP reservations next late March/early April? Might go as far south as Crescent City or beyond to Patrick's Pt. SP in N. CA. I ask because anymore I always attempt reservations in WA SP's.
  • We've done the coast trip in April with no reservations. Easily found spots in the state parks for our 40' motorhome.
  • Depends. If it's spring break - then absolutely. If not then it gets into the category of "maybe". As a general rule that time of the yr you should be able to find spots in any SP during the weekday (including Beverly Beach) - you may also find spots on the weekend if your timely and show up early. I generally don't make reservations and do OK ... but if I knew my plans a yr in advance I would probably make reservations.

I have found that to be the case with almost all privately owned parks, they pack you in like sardines.
Regarding KOAs, the one in Waldport OR is clean and well kept with a stunning view of Alsea bay and bridge. It goes for$46/night in the spring. That is not much more than the rates for a typical state park.

  • I would make reservations as soon as the window opens, if nothing else so you can get good sites. Fort Stevens and Beverly Beach are two busy campgrounds.

Do be aware that time of year that Honeyman H Loop us used by the off road community. Staying closer to the front will be quieter, but since there are other private campgrounds along the dunes it can be a busy time of year, particularly on weekends.

Harris Beach: Starting October 1, 2016 A and B loops will be first come, first served until the whole camp becomes reservable May 25, 2017 for the summer season.
All D loop sites will be closed until March 16, 2017
Most C loop sites, All Yurts, Meeting Hall will be reservable through the Fall/Winter season.

If you are looking for a private campground right on the beach we really enjoy Sea Perch RV resort. Not as inexpensive as Oregon State campgrounds but the view is amazing.
  • We camp a lot on the OR coast. We always make reservations because we have our favorite sites in various state parks campgrounds...We reserve them.

The only State parks I would make a res at would be Beverly Beach and Harris if you even planned on staying there. That's pretty early in the year for even the Oregon St parks. Only thing to check is spring vacation when families are out camping. That week some parks may be fuller than normal. For 2017 it's the last week in March.

    What Goduck said!
we go to the coast about every spring and never make
reservations. At the popular State Parks you may want to make reservations for the weekends although we didn't and had no problem getting a spot and that was in early May last year.
We hope to go in Feb. or March this spring.

Reservations are a must for Oregon and Calf. along the coasts. In Oregon the weekends tend to be full from local Oregon RVers. This can limit the number of days available for reservations if you want to stay a week or so. A friend lives in Oregon and tells me that many Oregon RVers start making coast reservations almost a year in advance. Personally I use private RV parks for that reason and that some of the state parks have limited RV sites for larger RV's. My favorite in the Seaside area near Astoria is RV Circle Creek RV Park. 503 738-6070. It makes a great home base from which to explore. Cannyon Beach has 2 RV parks, choose the one located out of town on the east side of hwy. 101. I would make reservations for private RV parks at least 6 months in advance. Reservations can always be cancelled or resheduled, just be aware of the cancellation policy.
