Ohio to New Orleans to Texas to Grand Canyon etc

We are planning a trip from Ohio south to Memphis then to NO then through Tx to Grand Canyon to Las Vegas to Boulder and would like to travel mostly at leisure with stops at 6 hours for overnight may stay if something catches eye. We would like Federal Parks or low cost clean safe sites for our stays and with interesting natural attractions throughout our trip.

Please if any of you know a route or portion of a route that was found interesting advise us we thank you.
  • Depart late May return unknown. If my wife lets me go to Seattle I may never return.

You didn't say when you were going, but Mardi Gras in New Orleans is Feb 17th in 2015. That's the end of a 10 day party in the streets. I loved it, but I was a lot younger then and I had a place to stay. An aircraft carrier parked at the foot of Canal Street. I was in the Navy then and our carrier served as sleeping quarters for all the marching bands in the parades. 2,000 cots set up in the hangar bay. N'awlins sure knows how to have a good time.
  • Thank you, no children just two old people 60's grown early 60's were 70 years old married 50 years.

Do some research on the Natchez Trace if you have never done that. I hope you don't have children with you. Never been to New Orleans? The French Quarter was interesting to say the least. If you are offended by scantily clad girls then stay away from the west end of Bourbon street. Its mostly adult entertainment places. Lots of homeless and beggars around the whole area. Now the outlying areas are OK. Lots of old plantations to tour. The Garden District. Its a busy city though. Lots of traffic.
  • Thank you

I have planned part of our next few months - we seem to be going in a similar direction:

New Orleans - Bayou Signette State Park
Galveston - Galveston Island State Park
San Antonio - in town commercial park
    Big Bend National Park
    Marfa, Tx
Carlsbad Caverns National Park - Brantley Lake State Park
    City of Rocks State Park
    Tucson - Saguaro National Park
Phoenix - Lost Dutchman State Park

We have stops to see in between, but these are some of the main points.

The escapees have parks in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona; you might check into membership for a great deal on their parks.

Don't know what route - but if you are on I-55 south of Memphis (about an hour) the Corp of Engineer park - Wallace Creek or Persimmon Hill on Enid Lake is nice. If you have a senior pass, it's $8 or $9 night for water/50 amp electric. .

    Thank you
