Richmond VA to Pittsburgh PA - must see places ?

We are planning to go from Richmond VA to Williamsport, MD and layover at Hagerstown / Antietam Battlefield KOA ..

From the name am presuming there is a battlefield nearby .. should we plan on staying several days ?

And any other place worth seeing .. we will be visiting family near Pittsburg where will be staying in home driveway.

Again will be taking our 19 ft. Tamarack on this trip.
  • we've made the trip from basically Breezewood PA out to va beach the last 4 years. One of my favorite parts of that trip is the drive up 17. I just really like that drive. The first year we went out by DC then down 95. That drive was terrible. I will never tow anywhere near DC again ever. :D
  • Yes, Verona is in the suburbs ... however seeing extended family in Verona ... sitting down and catching up after 4 or 5 years since seeing them ..
  • VERONA is only one block long....better do your sight-seeing before you get here.

Unless you plan a trip down town. Science center, museums, Zoo, incline....GOTTA RIDE THE INCLINE.....ducky tours. Lots to do in PGH.

Have you considered coming out of Breezewood via rt 30? A bit hilly, but you could stop by the FLIGHT 93 memorial. Then head south on 219 back to the T/P, or go north to rt 22.....OR, just stay on Rt 30 an avoid the tolls.

Richmond to Staunton VA on I-64; then I-81 to Hagerstown, then on up to Verona PA

OK. looks like the best route for you then is I-70 to the PA. turnpike than all the way to your destination. I just drove this route from DC to Pgh. in October. Nice road.

Actually, if you are talking about Monticello, Ash Lawn & Mitchies Tavern, they are all WEST of Richmond not far off I-64.
  • You can spend a whole day at Antietam. I assume that you will be taking 95->17->66->81. Fredericksburg has some nice battlefields to tour. You will cross the Appalachian Trail on I66 at Linden. There is a Camping World and Gander Mountain near Winchester and a nice outlet mall near Hagerstown. Unfortunately, you will also have to go through the Breezewood gauntlet on the way to Pittsburgh. But there are some nice touristy shops there. Have fun
