San Diego area in Feb.

Ok headed to Palm Springs then AZ as usual but going to change it up a bit and hit the San Diego area in Feb. Any great suggestions ?? We are Elks so will check out some of them if possible and have stayed at Chula Vista which is nice. Just looking for some first hand suggestions from those in the know :W Full hookups are not a must ;)
  • Thanks everyone for all your input, it is much appreciated. Everything depends on weather but we are heading out one way or the other next week :) San Diego area is atleast 4 weeks away so lots of time to check things out. Keep the suggestions coming and thanks again. Kathie
  • There is an Elks lodge that appears to have camping near Pio Pico also when coming in on Otay Lakes Rd.

BTW to the Ventura coast suggestion depends what the weather does. With todays storm the 101 south was closed at Solimar and everyone routed onto 1 right past the campsites for 4 hours during the rain due to mudslides and water flow on the 101. We only got .7 inches up there too so not a big rainfall, the bigger storms are the next 2 days.
  • Campland is referred to as 'Woodstock' by many of us locals. Chula Vista RV is very nice, but a recent review on rvparkreviews identified a concern I have had about being there. Mission Bay RV for the stuff in that area. Silver Strand, especially midweek, would be great for accessing the Coronado area. As far as Lake Skinner goes, it can be an absolute zoo, rivaling Campland, during weekends. Campground hosts have the told me in the past that local law enforcement won't support their efforts & locals know it. Pretty vacant midweek this time of year. And I believe it is Passport America. Pechanga is a very nice park, but is very popular on weekends. For easy access (if you time it around commuter traffic) to all of the Temecula & SD areas, you might consider Champagne Lakes located between Temecula & Escondido near the Lawrence Welk development. We spent New Year's Eve there. Could have heard a pin drop! Just what we were looking for! Word is getting out about the improvements the new owner has done. It is getting pretty popular.
  • In SD we stay at Chula Vista if going to Seaworld, beach, zoo etc. Have tried Mission Bay RV and Campland. The latter is HORRIBLE. Some like it but no way would I stay there! Mission Bay RV has tight spots but ok. Chula Vista is far nicer. I've heard KOA is decent. San Diego RV is a bit dirty, very tight spots including having to ask the office to open/close a gate to/from the street in order to get into or out of some spots.

We love the wine country and often opt to stay to the north in Temecula at Pechanga. Really nice RV resort. Close to the wineries as well as the Safari Park near Escondido.
  • If you're Thousand Trails members, Pio Pico in Jamul is decent. Extremely limited to no cell service and crappy wifi, though.
  • Unless you are fixed on Sandy Eggo :) you might also consider Rincon Parkway, Hobson Beach Park or Faria Beach Park. We are leaving Northern California at the end of this week, headed to Palm Springs, Death Valley, Havasu and Quartzsite. Then headed home slowly hoping to hit one of the three Ventura RV Parks along the Pacific Coast Highway. Rincon Parkway is almost a straight shot from Quartzsite to the Pacific Coast according to the maps I have seen. If you see us, give a wave and a honk. JH
    This is us:
  • San Diego has some lovely county parks. Often with hookups.

But, be flexible - if the predictions are true, it might be too rainy to make the effort worthwhile.
  • We like Santee Lakes. Lake Skinner near Temecula is nice if you like fishing or touring the wineries.
