Ship museums in Great Lakes area?

Which are "best."? Has anyone been to the one in N Chicago? Is it enough better to make it worth going into Chicago? Thanks!
  • Only one I know about and have visited is the "Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum", near Paradise Michigan. This is on Lake Superior, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

    Tripadvisor Link

It's a great museum, and the nearby bird sanctuary is also impressive.

Camp at Tahquamenon Falls State Park, a true gem of a campground in the UP.

  • To the OP:
Are you talking about museums (buildings) that have information about ships?
Are you asking about museums (buildings) that have information about ship WRECKS?
Or are you asking about actual ships that have been turned into museums?

If the latter, the U-505 German submarine at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry is pretty cool to go through, and they also have a film about how the sub was taken and how it was delivered up to the museum.

And if you are into Lakers and their like, the Duluth area has three that you can tour and go inside of: The iron ore (taconite) carrier William A. Irvin (US Steel's flagship carrier that they used to impress clients) in Duluth harbor. The SS Meteor whaleback bulk carrier across the harbor in Superior, WI. and the Edna G. Tugboat that used to push these big boys around while in harbor is located up the road 30 miles in Two Harbors, MN.

And here's a list of Ships that serve as museums on the Great Lakes:

  • Ditto on the museum at Whitefish Point north of Paradise. Also the Vally Camp tour and museum at Sault Ste Marie, MI. Last, though not a "ship" museum is the Les Cheneaux Historical Association Historical Museum, Maritime Museum and Boat Show in Cedarville/Hessel area of the UP. Also in the Les Cheneaux area is a boat building school, one of two in the country, where they teach wood boat building. Absolutely outstanding craftsmanship. I liked the offerings in the Les Cheneaux area best. I enjoyed Loons Point CG, Cedarville, while I was in the area last year. If you are an Elk, their camping facility in Sault Ste Marie provided great viewing.
  • Thanks for the info.! We are headed that way later this summer for the first time. We are making our list & checking it twice...
  • Surprised nobody has mentioned Toledo & the Great Lakes museum there. Great Lakes Museum on Trip Advisor

I spent half a day there but could have done a full day easy. The only disappointment was that the Lakers engine room was closed for painting.

If near Chicago again I might just brave the traffic & go see the U 505 museum. Since Bermuda is my home the U-505 has a connection to me as this is where it was towed & spent the remainder of the war after capture, anchored out hidden in plain sight. Its crew were interned at a rather nice estate not 5 minutes from where I live.
  • There is or used to be an old submarine you could tour near Muskegon Michigan.

Done that one too. A very old laker with the museum in her hold.

One of the Fitzgeralds lifeboats is in there.
