St. Andrews State Park, Florida Questions?

Just booked 5 nights at St. Andrews State Park near Panama City, Florida during the second week of March. It's our 30th anniversary week, and decided to take 2 weeks this year and get a good long vacation from work. Originally we were looking at Southern Florida, but changed our minds and decided to not drive quite so far (From North of Indianapolis).

So, finding a campsite anywhere in that area was a real challenge. Sites mostly were too small for our trailer. I compared Google Earth images with the State Park maps, so kept searching. St. Andrews won out. We would have loved to go back to St. Joseph, but they were 100% booked our 2 weeks.

So, after making the booking, I decided to do some back-searching on RV.net about St. Andrews. It appears there a lot to do in the area, but I'm more interested in the campground itself. Based on past posts, as recent as last June, it appears there's a dissatisfaction with the care and maintenance of the campground. Some even referred to it as a "dump". And others praised it because of it's easy access to all kind of activities.

So here we are a little later in history, and just wondering if anyone has visited there recently and can give a report of some kind. Specifically, condition of the campground? I mean, as long as it has running water, a decent dump station, the electricity works, and the trash dumpsters are routinely emptied I'm not too concerned abut the condition of roads, soft sand, and stuff like that. Hey! it's a beach right? and sand is not concrete. I understand that! I pack a lot of lumber with me when camping in Indiana. But is there anything else that should be considered (logistically) in preparation to go. I have lumber for under the tires and stabilizer jacks on the sand.

Another comment in RV.net annals talked about flooding. Is this still a problem? When we were at St. Joseph over Christmas (2014), we survived the tornado warnings, but many of the campsites were flooded out. Poor campers. Ours was dry, but we really felt for those folks that got hit hard. So wondering if flooding is something to be concerned about. (Not sure what kind of weather to expect in March).

Are the electric hook-ups stable? Is the water at the spigots drinkable?

I'm not too concerned about the bath houses as we never use them. We use the facilities in our camper. But, does the dump station have any issues. (we bring our blue tote).

Another poster made a comment about day visitors coming in, and a concern there was no security measures for the camp ground. Is this really an issue, or is the issue because day visitors are just using the beach areas near the campers? I'm just attempting to get a feel for how secure we need to lock-down our belongings here.

Anyway, regardless of answers, we're already scheduled. But your comments can help us prepare a little better. By the way, we did stay at St. Joseph over Christmas, so we do have something to compare St. Andrews with. So any tips you may give on the campground, set-up, what to watch for, what to avoid, what to bring that might be unique for this campground would be greatly appreciated.

I do have a pair of knee-high rubber boots I use at home. They are rubber boots for slopping hogs, but we don't have hogs, but we do have deep mud in Indiana. I'll bring them along just in case of high water. Your thoughts and suggestions please. All comments welcome and will be considered very carefully.

I'm replying specifically to the security question of your post. We stayed there recently (past six months) and we probably won't stay there again. Our car was broken into. The problem with the park is that people using the boat ramp or other beach facilities have access to the campground area. So to answer your question. Lock everything up in your car and your camper. I like the campground for the summer months because of the jetty. But we won't stay there again because of the campground security issue. Next time we'll stay somewhere else and just spend the day at the jetty.

Your car was broken into, but yet you are saying to lock your stuff up in your car? lol

We stayed there almost 13 years ago. It was fine then. No issues of anything you mentioned. Of course things can change. Every Florida State Park (or any state park no matter where) we've ever been to, allow day use. Once you are in the gate, there is no other barrier to keep you out of the campground. At least of all the parks we've been to. I do think Curry Hammock does have a seperate coded security gate. But it's not gonna stop people from walking in.

You misunderstood what I wrote. I was not saying to lock everything that you have in your car. I was saying anything that is in your car or camper to keep it locked at all times. GMAB - A

We were there for a week in June.
It was a little muddy when it rained a lot but we didn't have flooding.

We left all of our lawn chairs, grills, ice chests, etc. out while we went to the beach and had no issues with theft.

I did have a woman come up and grab my beach bag and try to take it saying I stole her wallet. This was at the beach up on the Boardwalk near the bathrooms and concession stands. She was screaming at me and shoving me trying to get my bag. She wanted to look in it. I thought she was on drugs or something. I don't even know where she came from until she tried to snatch my bag. I told her to back off and wasn't going to let her look in it but my husband came and made me let her look. I guess because I was 62 and she was twenty something she thought I would just give her my bag. (I used to have red hair):B She said "what did you do with my wallet?" She then started screaming that she was going to call the police and I told her she needed to because if she didn't I was. When police got there he talked to each of us separately. He didn't even look in my bag. He just ask if I want to press charges and I told him "no" that I had to leave in a couple of days but that I just wanted him to let her know I could press charges for assault.

Anyway, no other issues (and maybe she won't be there. LOL)

The hookups worked fine.. Our MIFI worked fine. Enjoyed camping there. My only issue was having to drive to the beach.

I live about 20 miles from St Andrews and I agree with Crawfordville. I really wouldn't leave anything unsecured, especially during spring break. I use to work about five miles from the park and we had cars broken into in our parking lot during the day. The area draws a lot of criminals during spring break. Not necessarily the college kids - but criminals who like to target drunk spring breakers.

Have never actually camped in the park but bicycle thru quite often. The campground has always appeared to be very clean and well kept. We stay at Panama City Beach RV Resort just before the entrance of the park. We will be there from 7Feb till 16Mar.

Sorry I didn't read your whole post first as I didn't answer your questions. There are quite a few day campers in the park each day coming to the beach and to go fishing. We have never had any problems leaving our gear outside. We leave chairs and our bikes, umbrellas, grill. No problems. Dump station are good and easy to get to. Water is good to drink, no problems. Bath houses have always been clean. It is surrounded on three sides by water bay and the gulf. So I guess if it was to rain a whole bunch it could be wet as it is not very high ground. We have not seen this problem. The camp grounds are next to the Bay. The Gulf beach is about a mile from the camp grounds. Enjoy it you will. Joe

We have camped at this park many times over the last five yrs. It is one of our favorite parks. Have never been in one of the bath houses when it was not clean. If it rains a lot sometimes water will stand in some of the wooded campgrounds. We have never had a problem with this. It also has a great beach area, and plenty of restaurants that are close by with lots of good food. I would highly recommend St. Andrews. Drive thru and pick you a good spot you won't be disappointed. This park is a little more city as St Joe is a little more country. We love both. Joe

Most of the issues stem from longtime neglect of the road system. The electric was upgraded a few years ago and the water is fine as is the dump station. Flooding is a rare event usually associated with tropical weather or torrential summer rain. I have never had any concerns with security. It's a great location and one of the busiest parks in the system that the park manager has allowed to be neglected. His lame replies to my concerns made it obvious he is the issue at this park. Other parks with less visitors get more money each year to make repairs and improvements while his parks CG road system decays.

We were at St. Andrews the end of November this year. It was our first visit and we had a great time. We had a water site. Pictures on the website a very accurate. When anyone pulled out the hosts came and checked the site, cleaned out the firepit, etc. One of the hosts was blowing leaves off the road way. Deer were wandering in the park along with other wildlife. There was security at the gate. Washrooms were very clean. You will have a great visit.

We have not been there for a few years but you won't find much if any mud on St Andrews unless you go wading in the bay. The campground is on sand as is the rest of the island. I can't comment on the current conditions. The last half of March is Spring Break season for the Florida Schools. The Gulf will be too cold to go swimming for Floridians but northerners may find the water tolerable since we saw them swimming in Lake Superior.

The CG is away from the beaches and we have never had any sort of problem in Florida parks. For that matter I've never been in any state park that had CG security other than the "For registered campers only" signs at the CG entrance.
