This is a very short trip report:

Morro Bay blog post

One of the highlights was a day trip to Piedras Blancas, north of Morro Bay -- the male elephant seals were fighting for dominance:

The blog post also includes a couple of short video clips of the seals.

Phil, I think you can do it -- I am pretty sure that Tiger 4x4 went there in a class C.

Phil, the flu meant that our walks were much shorter than usual -- three miles at most, level ground, slow pace, and lots of naps. It was sub-optimal, to put it mildly, but we decided not to cancel since this was our only window for a trip during the first several months of the year.

And are you referring to Mattole Beach Campground, on the Lost Coast? We have been there with our trailer -- a very long and tricky drive, but worth it if you like silence and ocean air. I have heard it can get busy on weekends. We were there mid-week, just after July 4, and it was empty.

In this blog post, do a word-search for BLM to get to the description of the campground and the beach:

Mattole

I believe the CG I had read about some time ago must have been Mattole, but I couldn't recall the name. From what you say and I've read elsewhere, we probably shouldn't try to get to it in our Class C. At the very least there might be problems if we met another vehicle on the road going in or out.

A.W. Way County Park is in the area but not on the coast. We might be able to access it in our RV:

Los Osos really looks like a terrific place to live -- quiet, lots of fresh clean air, plenty of outdoor recreation nearby. It's a wonder that anyone would want to leave it to go on vacation! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Dan,

As you drove through Los Osos, on the way to Montana de Oro, you were about a mile away from me. ๐Ÿ™‚

Wow, what a beautiful sunset picture in your blog!

Dan, nice pictorial. The wilder, less populated parts of the West Coast never cease to amaze. You just need to sit there a while and take it in as it comes, which it looks like you did.

Dan .... great trip photos!! How'd ya do it with the flu?

Your trip reminded me of a great adventure camping trip I'd like to make into the wild Northern CA coastal area that may not be doable in even our small Class C. Have you ever camped anywhere near or in the Lost Coast area of CA? One can boondock camp someplace in their right on one of the pristine remote beaches, but as I understand it only a TC can get in. There is another campground we can maybe get into about 5 miles up a river from a beach area there, but you have to then hike into the beach from your campsite.

Just curious - as I know that you camp in a lot of interesting places with your small TT.

We didn't make it to the lighthouse, and we saw few critters (other than the seals). We did see an otter for a few seconds, but not long enough to get a photo.

Point Buchon is really great -- it looks the way the coast looked before the coast was settled. Different from Montana de Oro, even though it is right next door.

That area, Point Buchon to Ragged Point, is one of my favorite places on earth. I'm glad that you swallowed your aversion to campgrounds long enough to go there and see the sights. Were you able to see critters on the Pt. Buchon hike? The last time I hiked there, a vulture was perched on a fence post near the trail and further south there were long-tailed weasels romping in the grass.

Beautiful photos. We were there during the time you were, but in one of the private RV parks in Morro Bay. We have talked a lot about taking the Point Buchon hike, but just have never taken the time. That's definitely on our "to do" list.
