traveling from point A to point B

snowbirds that travel down in the cold weather, and have full hookups when you get down south for the winter, do you carry a small generator and gas for it in case you get stuck on the side of the road due to road closures and or the weather?
  • Well, we have a generator on board but I've seen various rv travelers, mostly trailers that carry generators with them in case of an emergency. Hope this helps.
  • I usually have my Honda 2000i generator along with an air compressor. If I had a flat or just low air and no electricity I can fill the tire(s) until I get a tire shop. Another use, one I thought of after reading a thread on this site, would be if your tow vehicle were to need service and you didn't have electricity available you can be assured a good battery with the generator. And there's always the possibility of helping out a fellow traveler if necessary.
  • We always travel with our generator but not thinking so much of getting stuck somewhere (its only a days travel to get well below the freeze line) but we spend a fair amount of time boondocking on the beach once we get there. No doubt we could USE the generator for that purpose should it ever occur.
  • We don't have a generator in our van/travel trailer set up but we choose our weather window wisely and its NO problem. Just need to get beyond the nasty weather like snow, sleet, etc.

  • We carry a Honda 2000 full of fuel and a 2 gal can of gas all the time when we travel, with either the trailer or the camper, winter or summer. We have plenty of solar on both rigs for our needs, but having the generator just seems to be good insurance for a lot of situations that could arise. For the run south we have the generator, full propane tanks, lots of food, and plenty of drinking water in jugs....used to live in Northern BC years ago and travelled remote roads in winter with small kids so always had to be prepared...never got over it I guess.....also remember a few years back when Troopers had to use snowmobiles to get food & gas to motorists caught in a storm and stranded in snow along a strip of I-5 in Or e gun....so, it can happen!
  • This is my 19th year to go south from Pa to Florida with a tag along and I have never had need for a generator
