What to do Columbus Day Weekend in Gettysburg PA

HI to all,
We're planning on staying in Gettysburg for the last camping holiday weekend of the season and know of a few sites that we're going to while there.
We were curious to know of other less known or special sites/ attractions that might be worth while seeing. Only interested in Gettysburg region as we have made many trips to Lancaster and surrounding areas. We are taking a toad so we will be mobile.

I agree with Mike - our favorite is Gettysburg Campground. Just be aware they close for the season on Nov 23.

We were at Gettysburg Campground a few yrs ago, very clean, maintained campground. most of the sites we noticed were level, well stocked camp store. Campground had a nice appeal.

Gettysburg area has plenty things to do.

Do go to some of the monuments on this site. Most have GPS coordinates.Brings life to the battlefield.

Get a good guide book and research the battle while you are there. Can buy at the bookstore at the visitor center.

Go to Sach's bridge near the battlefield. Great covered bridge with historic and ghost stories.

It is Halloween so take a ghost tour or two.

An hour east in Lancaster is James Buchanon's Wheatland. He was the 15 th president. Cool tour of his Victorian house. Many People who visit Amish country never heard of Wheatland. Just east of Lancaster is the Strasburg rail museum. Very nice collection of railroad things, smack dab in Amish Country. You can do both Wheatland and the rail museum in a day.

Everything rambow said.......!! Gen. Pickett's is one of our favorite places to eat. I'll also suggest Cashtown Inn, west of Gettysburg about 8 miles, just off of Rt. 30. While you're out there, check out the Round Barn for fresh fruits & vegetables, plus a good selection of jams, jellies and salad dressings. Also out that way is the Adams County Winery. You'll swear you're lost but it's worth the trip (we're partial to their red wines and their specialty white wine "Tears of Gettysburg").

Have fun! Tried to get a site in Gettysburg for weekend after Columbus with no luck. Going to Harpers Ferry, WV instead.

We did this Food Tour a couple of weeks ago. Not only do you get fantastic food but Lori is very knowledgeable about the history of downtown. I highly recommend it!

Land of Little Horses is kind of neat.Also,Pine Grove Furnace State Park isn't far. They have a small visitor center.It's the half way point on the Appalachian Trail.About a mile from the park are the remains of an old POW camp.They sell a book about that at the visitor center.They also sell a map that shows where all the buildings were.If you go to the site of the old camp,they have numbers that correlate to the map so you can see what was there.

Check out the General Pickett's Buffet on Steinwher Ave., just up the street from the National Cemetery. It was a hang-out for the cast and crew of the Gettysburg and Killer Angels, the movies. The entry hall is covered with photos from the films and cast, while the dining room is decorated with scores of artworks of the campaign and its participants. Oh yeah, the food is pretty good, too! ๐Ÿ™‚ There are bus slots where you can park your rig, and even more parking space behind a closed restaurant next door.

If you have not seen it in the last few years, don't miss the Cyclorama at the Visitors' Center. The eight-year restoration of this 360 degree painting and its new sound and light display are breathtaking.

We have stayed at a number of area campgrounds over the last three plus decades, but our regular is the Gettysburg Campground on Route 116, Fairfield Road, west of town. Nice folks and a well-kept, wooded campground with Marsh Creek bending around it. The creek-side sites are especially nice. A certified RV technician, JR of JR's RV Service has his shop there. Unlike a lot of RV dealers and shops, he's very competent and knowledgeable. In the past few years JR has done several jobs I could not, or did not want to tackle, while we camped, some right at our campsite. One caveat: he does not do the automotive/chassis work, but he'll service anything built and installed by the coach-maker.

Nice festival with crafts, food, old engines, music, car show, etc etc. It's held the first two weekends in October each year and draws big crowds.
