winter storage of RV in the south when I live in the north

We live in western New York and are going to Florida in November but must come back by the beginning of December. Thinking about leaving the RV, class A, just south of Columbia South Carolina. We can get there in two days the first day staying with friends in Kentucky do not want to stay in any hotels. Then we are going back in February getting the RV and going to Florida. Good idea bad idea? Anyone know of a safe place to store the RV in the area of Columbia SC? Are we better off leaving the RV further south and staying in hotels, an idea we really do not like but if it is better for the RV.
  • We've done the same thing for years. It beats dragging the rig all the way home, just to turn around and drag it back again.
I would recommend that you find an RV park that offers storage in the general area that you want to leave it. Also, plan on winterizing it since even South Carolina is subject to some pretty cold weather at times.
  • We winterized the trailer when we left it at Myrtle Beach. It only takes a few minutes. For the batteries simply removed the fuse that fed the radio and monitors so there was no drain.
  • Not being close to the rv would make me want to leave a little further south then South Carolina in December. There could be a cold snap come through, I'm assuming you won't winterized. I'm doing the same thing, makes sense for gas mileage to drive back for Christmas. I don't particularly like hotels either but sometimes it's just easier.
  • I don't think you'll have any problems storing it there. If you store in SC you'll probably need to winterize though - even if it's just until December. Someone more familiar with that area can chime in but I think you are still at risk of deep freeze there.
  • We stored our TT over Christmas last winter at Ocean Lakes in Myrtle Beach.

There storage program is well run and inexpensive. They do store MH units as well.
  • Hey Skip...

You might want to try Barnyard RV Park in Lexington, SC. It's only a couple of minutes from the intersection of I-20 and I-26. Pretty nice place and it has 24 hour security. I know they have a storage area, but I don't know what they charge for it. Give them a call at (803) 957-1238.

    Good luck!
  • When I looked into it I found that storage for a MH to be 'really' inexpensive in the south. I guess they know they will be full up and can offer lower rates compared to up North.

I also found that the good ones are fenced AND have a person living in an RV on the lot to watch over the customers stored RV's

The other alternative I found to be a good deal and safe is CG's. Most have an area for stored RV's. Managers on site and filled with campers make for a pretty safe place that thief's don't want to frequent.

What I did was find a nice CG and stay there for a couple of days to watch how the CG operates. If it looks good THEN go up and ask for the rate to store your RV.

    Good Luck.
