Have you installed a shower surround?

My brand new trailer did not come with a shower surround. Just the vinyl wall covering. I was assured that this was totally waterproof but wife wants a surround. I have priced them out they are not too bad for a one piece 3 sided surround. From some of the pictures I have seen it looks like the surrounds have double stick adhesive tape on the back for fastening to the wall? Looks simple enough but would like some pointers from anyone that has done this...... Or, should I pay the Dealer to install it?
  • Camping World, PPL even Amazon all sell RV shower Surrounds. From what I have read RV shower surrounds come with adhesive tape and some also use a plastic pop rivet plug that you push into the wall.

The surrounds are 3 sided with no pan so I would think it would be flexible to get through the bathroom door and into the shower? The size I would need would be 24x40x56.

I would be reluctant to use a super adhesive thinking if you ever had to remove the surround you may have to destroy the wall to get it out.

It seems that most pre formed surrounds you find at a home store come in 36" 48". 40" seems to be a specific RV size...

I think I will call the Dealer just to see what they would charge and then I can make a decision if I want to do it on my own or not.

totally depends on how much they will charge. calculate up what you will pay for parts, bandaids, etc. and see how much extra they want.

  • Never done one in a RV but several in homes and mobile homes. I always use the caulk / adhesive made for tub surrounds with excellent results. Did one with fiberglass walls and it held fine. Not sure I would trust adhesive tape to hold up.

May be hard to find a one piece unit to fit your space. And like a previous poster said it will probably not fit in the RV. The ones with flat wall panels can be cut to fit your situation. They usually have corners that go on top of panels to hide the seams and make it waterproof. Corner pieces may or may not have shelves. Shelves could be good for you or eat up valuble space, so depends on the room you have.

Pretty easy to install if you have flat solid surfaces to work with.
  • Do you have any construction/remodeling experience? It is an easy task to buy FRP panels, cut to size, and glue onto the existing walls. Two panels and the proper adhesive/surround sealant will be less than $75 in most markets.
  • Back in 1988 we bought a new Mallard, it also only had vinyl wall paper in the shower. I did put on plastic shower wall covering. It's been so long ago I don't remember very well but I think that it was 3 piece. It worked well and we were happy with the result.
