Make your own Remote Controlled step light

The Kwikee under step light is in the wrong location and useless, it turns off after a short period of time after actuation of the steps,

so here is my solution

I am using a 12vdc powered, single channel, RF remote controller with the load relay rated at 10 amps. The transmitter is about 1.25" X 2.25" am5/16" thick.

The LED light strip is waterproof, 30cm and has 15, 3528 amber LEDs.

I bought the remote and light strips(4/pk) for less than $10.00 on ebay with free shipping.

Moderator edit to re-size pictures to forum recommended limit of 640px maximum width.

  • Thanks for the clicky; I often forget because the other forums I use automatically make one when a link is pasted.

I love that low cost relay. I could make a remote controlled rear light for backing in at night.
Oh, and if the controller is battery powered it would make it pretty easy to build a step down warning alarm.

For less than $6, you can afford to experiment.

Try now, something went wacky, it's a new method for me.
    Displayed perfectly, now.
Cool little project, it got me thinking.
  • In the photograph of the receiver, the black wire that goes from right to left and enters both ends is a jumper from the hot input to the mover of the relay.

My common for the light strip is a chassis ground I made by drilling a hole in the frame around the step.

The wires on the right go to an after market fuse panel and will have a 2 amp fuse as soon as I buy a pack of them. I have a bunch of 2 amp 120 vac power supplies and will use the others on S&B projects.
  • I'll search for the exact remote on ebay and reply back.

This is like mine except it only has a single button, mine has two buttons. I honestly would buy two in order to have a second button. These are not learning remotes but I bet all seven million are use the same code.

There is a cover that slides over the pushbutton to prevent accidental actuation.

I did not want an external antenna on the receiver, mine and this one the antenna is inside the case.

  • Nice Mod, i like
and i still have some light strip left
but no remote, but i'll figure out something

    thanks for the idea
  • Can you provide more info on the remote...like name, model or whatever I need to put into a search engine to find it. I like your mod.
  • Tried to post up your images but something about the code is whacky.
