2012 299RKS Cougar

Good Morning from Sunny Arizona ! ! ! Yeh right. Hey does anyone have the 299RKS Cougar fifth wheel? I may get this one and would like to hear some pros and cons! ! ! Thanks in advance! Good Luck & Be Safe ! ! !
  • Blessings in disguise. We went, a/c didn't work, blinds were damaged, a few little cosmetic issues and a few concerns that weren't able to be answered. and the price is comparable to a new one of similar style and actually that we like a bit better. So, long story short, pass on that purchase and on to the other one. If we wait a moth or two or three, so we will get what and we want and not what we don't want including colors and options as well. So Have a great day to all, Good Luck & Be Safe ! ! !
  • Thanks, We are going back to look at it again today. They are pulling it up and turning on a/c and such so we can spend some time in it to check things out. I will look at those things mentioned plus my multitude of stuff! Thanks again, any other comments are appreciated.
  • We absolutely LOVE our 2013 Keystone Cougar 327RES. We have had NO problems with it whatsoever!
  • I looked seriously at the 299RKS in 2011. But using an IR thermometer showed the grey color got considerably hotter outside than a white Cougar beside it. Inside temp was also elevated. Without a 50 amp option or dual pane windows I felt it was a bad choice for any hot climate. Very happy with my decision.
  • I am on my second Keystone fifth wheel and am have been happy with both. My Keystone Sydney is about the same design and price level as the Cougar. All RV makes and models have their quirks and bugs to work out when used or new. The key is making sure you are 100 percent satisfied with every square inch of the unit before you sign the papers and leave the dealership. I recommend that you check out this forum: Keystone owners forum
Lots of good first hand info from Keystone owners and the site is not monitored or owned by Keystone. There is a good PDI checklist there as well that you should download and use.
  • We have a 2011 Cougar High Country 299RKS. We love it but there have been some things we've needed/wanted to do with it. For one thing in 2011 they didn't even offer a 50amp version so we are stuck with one A/C. We added a Fantastic Fan in the B/R but I would have preferred an A/C up there. I switched to 16" wheels/tires but that's personal preference. The cabinet floors in the pantry busted through from the weight of canned goods, etc, and so I rebuilt those. I think most of the issues with the unit are common with many trailers at this price level.

We do love ours and have over 15,000 miles of use on it.

We just suffered a break in our black water holding tank that I am in the midst of repairing. Don't really know who's fault that is. While I've got the whole bottom of the trailer off I am upgrading the cheezy 1/8" insulation to 1" rigid insulation board. I do help that helps keep the trailer warmer/cooler but we'll see.
  • I think you will find that the Cougar is not that well insulated for the AZ summer heat. Any chance you have 50 amp service and can add a second A/C unit.

  • I have a 276rls 2010 and have had many issues that Keystone would not cover under the warranty. The graphics have pealed...the water pump sounds like a thrashing machine from day 1( normal to dealer) the front landing gear teeth snapped (blamed it on me) the electronic control panel shorted for no reason that was a $1000.00 bill. The tires they put on the new unit were two years old when delivered to us. 10,000 miles in four years new tires $900.00. We have been on 42 trips so it gets plenty of use. One issue that bugs me is that on the show room model none of the cords or wall plugs are exposed behind the TV but on our rig the plugs are not hidden. I was too excited when getting the rig to notice. The galley gray tank valve is under the rig behind a wheel and a pain to get under and open at the dump site. The fancy gas connection for the BBQ is after the regulator you need a special BBQ to use that connection. Good luck what ever you decide on and happy camping.
