We just purchased our first 5th wheel. 1999 Alfa Ideal. It did not come with batteries so now we don't know how to wire them in. Nor can we find a manual online. Can anyone help us with a manual, diagram or photo of the battery hook up?
Thanks!

Thank you for the responses! Yes, my husband knows more than I about electrical stuff. He was able to figure it out after watching a few videos on YouTube University.
But it is good to know that you all are willing to help for future questions.
Thanks!

You can help us with a photo of the battery compartment.

Okay Old Lady, somebody forgot to welcome you to the Forums, so;

Welcome to RV.NET and in general the most helpful group of RVers you will find online.

There are a few guidelines and you'll learn those as times goes on. Here is one of the most important, learn how to effectively use the SEARCH functions. There are instructions, they are called stickys, look for them as you use different features. Number two is, pictures are invaluable to those of us trying to help you. There are great instructions on including them as part of your of your post. Oh yeah, you partially identified your trailer, in fact you did pretty good, if IDEAL is the model identifier just add the number 32v or what ever. I know squat about trailers so letting us know it is a 5er, is great, from my very limited experience, I think the cabinet that you can't get when hooked to your TV is where your batteries should go and where the charger is. But I'm guessing.

Now to give you a set of drawings to peruse, go to this link, Clicky. Reading this will tell you far more than you ever thought you would need and that's probably true, but, there are drawings that you asked for and need.

I assume in using the word WE, you are inferring that there are two or more of you and that will be helpful. Two Hands and all that. The batteries in your rig are just like the battery in your car. They are just charged differently in as much as your trailer doesn't have an engine and alternator to charge them. Your partner may know a little more about car batteries than you and that will help.

The first two responses are accurate and helpful so reread them. A DMM or Digital Multi Meter is helpful and can be purchased for under $20.00. A 12 volt test light is also pretty helpful and faster to use, a VOM is a Volt Ohm Meter and is just as good for most work you'll do but still as good as a DMM.

I'm going to assume that there was or is a place on the tongue or in a cabinet with those two big wires that look like the ones used to connect your car batteries to the car. Maybe I should say truck or easier TV(Tow Vehicle). One of those wires goes to the steel frame of your trailer, the other to a distribution panel with a bunch of fuses and connections to the built in charger. The one to the steel frame is connected to the smaller or negative terminal of the battery and the one from the distribution panel connects to the larger or positive terminal.

Once you get that part figured out and if you still have questions, take a picture if possible and post your question with reference to what is in the picture.

Good luck and welcome to a wonderful lifestyle and membership in a great forum.

Did you find where the battery goes? One wire will probably be black and very large and connected/bolted to the frame, that is the ground. The other wire is probably red or white again very large and it is the positive. An ohm meter or volt meter with small batter can help sort out the other wires, there are usually more than one.

But if you really have no clue I'd suggest taking it to someone that knows what they're doing as you risk shorting out electronic items if you hook it up wrong.

The manual only discusses maintenance things like what to use to clean fabrics and how to jack it up to change a tire. You will need to trace the wires to find out what they are for and whether positive or negative. Sorry I can't help more, If you post a picture of the battery compartment and the wires it may help shed some light.
