I had the same truck as you with the long bed. I first set up with it all the way back and it took 50 lbs.off the front axel when I had the trailer hooked up. I then moved it all the way forward and it added 20 lbs. to the front axel.

It is your call where you put it. I left ours all the way to the front.

I assume you have a long bed truck??? Fill in sig.

Industry standard is 2" in front of the centerline of the rear axle. Reason??? Simply because "SOME" weight should be transferred to the front axle. The reality is with my B&W "FULL FORWARD" I only add around 150# to the front axle with well over 5K pin weight. Unless there is a clearance reason the hitch should be set full forward. To do so with the B&W the side plates that hold the hitch head need to have the straight sides placed towards the cab.

I have mine set so the king pin is centered over the axle, it would be best to have it an inch or two in front of the axle but then I can't open my front cargo door.

For me, I've always had a long box pick up so I have thought of the front to back positioning more from a weight distribution angle. How much or how little extra weight do I want on the steer axle.

The cab to trailer concern would certainly be high on my list if I had a short box truck though. I guess the best answer would be to try several positions and see which one works/feels the best for YOU.

I have a B & W hitch and there are quite a few options as to front to back positioning and a I think three different height position options.

In most cases 2"s ahead of axle center would be considered ideal. You should have posted your rig specs, truck, and trailer. I think you have a Ram 3500 dually long bed. With a standard bed, you would want to stay close to axle center, to allow more trailer to cab clearance. In your case, long bed, you should start out 2"s ahead of axle center, with the arms in the more forward position. With your heavy TH, you will likely have some weight added to your front axle, in the arm forward position. At some point, you need to weigh the rig, to know you are in the best arm position, for your rig. I am only guessing, but you will probably add about 200 lbs. to the front axle. You don't want to overload the front axle, when you have plenty of room on the rear.

If it is too far to the front (cab of the truck) when you go to hitch up and the tailgate is down you could hit the RV with the tailgate while backing up into the hitch.
