Bolts snap off

Belly panel bolts are so small they snap off. Any quick fix? Do you have to drill in new larger self threaders or drill out holes and use new heavier self threaders.
  • stainless is just that. Not all that strong. You will snap stainless faster than a steel cad plated one. I've broken a lot taking off the panels that cover my underneath. Mostly rust. I replaced them with the 5/16 nut size. 1/4 in is too small. put them in, back them out and put some never sieze on them and put them back in. They will come out next time.
  • I'm not sure they are really bolts. What you described looks like what I have on mine which looks like a ramset type fastener which are shot on like shooting a gun. Not the best for easy removal.

  • As with many other imported (low cost junk),I'm seeing this in many aspects of life(not just rv'ing). Bolts, screws, springs with poor tempering (over tempered), breaking like glass when put under stress! It's getting increasingly difficult to buy/find quality.
  • I am going to replace them as needed with older original style I had on my other rigs. If they had used SS they probably would not snap off. Thanks for the post.
  • Fastenal carries a stainless steel self drilling/self tapping. I snapped several off dropping the chloroplast belly to look at piping. I think I used 1/4" that had a 7/16" hex head. Maybe 3/4" long. Installed with cordless driver.
  • Not in motion. Very small bolts about a 1/4 socket head. Many newer rigs are using them like Cougar. These bolts are junk. They even have plastic around the head so they do not over torque them. Mine is a Crusader.I am use to larger bolts that come loose quickly with a impact driver.
  • Many will break when you try to unscrew them because they are really tight, and extremely brittle so the heads break off. You can't drill them out easily because they are so hard. I put the same size back in because the size is right.
  • Snap off while rig is in motion? That would indicate the rig is flexing. This could be issue.
I would try larger self drilling bolts next to the broken ones.
may want to increase number of fasteners.
