Need input from Cedar Creek Hathaway and Silverback owners.

DW and I are torn between the Hathaway 34re and Silverback 33IK.

Is the price difference between the two, meaning the Hathaway is about 5-7K more, worth it for the little extras you get?

We will be using it for weekend and long week trips now, but plan on using it as our Snow bird retreat in about 8-10 years. Want to have it paid off before we get there. It will be garage kept, so I know the condition will be great.

Looking for all opinions.

TOTALLY agree with MPI_Mallard....we are "Creekers" for life...after the way they just treated us on the repair of our 2009 Silverback wide body. Ask anybody that is a member of the Cedar Creek RV Owners Club (CCRVOC)what they think.

Ask any "creeker" about CC's "after the sale" customer service which in my opinion having dealt with them is the best in the industry which really makes the difference and is why i'm a "creeker"!!!!

On the Silverback I had, the awning stopped just past the door, and the vaulted slide dumped a lot of water right on the steps in a hard rain. Plus you cannot install slide toppers on a vaulted slide, but other than that it was a great 5th wheel.

Nobody ever said "I wish I would have gotten the cheaper one" We just got a new Creek coming out of a 2011 Big Country. No comparison. We really like this one.

I will add to my early comments and to what RVcrazy said above about 10 years from now. Our earlier trailer was a 29' (30.5' overall) and it served us well for 11 years. We really like the computer desk, king bed, large shower and two recliners that look directly at the TV.

Our new trailer/home is 39'4" OAL, and is like a little apartment, with theater seating across for a 48" TV, island kitchen with butler's pantry with counter ahead of kitchen, again a king bed and large shower. giant basement and high roof line all the way to the back which makes it feel very open. And we love it.

That said you my want to buy a slightly used trailer for a few years or up to chooser to when you are ready to snowbird. Then you will have wants nailed down better. Chris

I would buy used. Many people find that their preferences change after they get some experience. I would NOT expect that you will want what you think you want 10 years from now... (We bought a used, refurbished Hitchhiker.)

While some parks do arbitrarily enforce a 10 year old limit, many will accept an older rig that is in good shape. I have seen 10 year old rigs look much nicer than 5 year old rigs because the owners really take care of them.
That being said, the CC is considered the higher of the two lines. Basic construction is the same but the CC comes with a few more items as standard instead of options. We opted for the CC because of the standard features after putting the pencil to the paper to see what adding those items to the SB would cost. The CC came out cheaper in the long run. But only you can decide what are the must haves and what are negotiable.

The Silverback does not get a rear cap, which is a show stopper for me. For a trailer to be in good shape in 8-10 years you have to start with a high quality one from the get go. HOWEVER remember that most large snowbird parks have a 10 year rule that they can use to reject units that they feel do not meet that standards.

So maybe invest in a less expensive one for the years before retirement and then get a nice unit to carry you into the first 10 years of snowbirding. We are in our 9 year of snowbirding and 11 years of retirement. This year we replaced our 11 year old trailer with a new larger 2017 model. Chris

FWIW, I wouldn't rule out the SB 35IK. Bigger bathroom WITH a real linen closet. SB's have a raised basement floor and NO divider between basement and docking station (2 of my complaints w/ CC). SB have a window on street side (on some models) by slide whereas CC doesn't. SB have the cathedral ceilings. Pass side basement door opens sideways on SB verses up. Both very well built. Differences is what keeps the 2 lines well.....different.

Silverback has always been the low price version. Generally speaking there are a few less frills, and lower grade cabinet finishes. What is optional on the SB can usually be found as standard on regular CCs. Both are built on the same assembly line using the same techniques. Either will serve you well, so pick which one YOU feel most comfortable with and go.
