Changing Pin Box..Hard To Do?

I just purchased a 2014 Palomino Columbus 365RL. It has the standard pin box. I want to change it out for a TrailAir pin box. What is involved in the process of changing the pin box.
  • I have changed several by myself, but if you can get a helper it goes quick. Good luck!
  • We used a motorcycle jack on the tailgate if the truck. We were able to jack it into position and install it with no problems. Have never used that jack on the motorcycle. We just used it to remove and reinstall the RV steps for painting.
  • I installed my TrailAire in a little over an hour. Having the proper tools is essential, and I used my loader tractor with a pallet on the forks.

Unbolt the old one, bolt up the new one. Check for height and placement of hitch and adjust accordingly.

Wear your truss too. :) Heavy, heavy, heavy. It might be worth it to have it done with a hitch that heavy. JMO of course.

    *NO* truss required!.:R

Use a hydraulic table lift - cribbing if necessary to add (table) height and to secure position of hitch on table.

    Been there, done that.

  • Mine is a 5th Airborne, but I did the same as B.O. and by myself.
Backed truck under with tailgate down,
lowered the jacks til a couple inches above tailgate,
    removed the bolts,
dropped the old pin box on tailgate,
    raised jacks,
    pulled truck forward,
    moved old pin box over,
slid new pin box in place,
    backed truck under,
    carefully lowered jacks,
    put bolts back in,
    raised jacks,
    pulled truck forward,
    tightened bolts,
    done.
  • I did mine by myself with nothing more than some sockets and wrenches and a couple 6x6 blocks of wood. Drop your tailgate and back under it. Use the front jacks on your trailer to lower or raise to the right height to be able to set it on the wood blocks on your tailgate. Do the same thing to install the new one. Just set it on the blocks, slide it back into place, move the trailer up or down to line up the holes. An impact wrench is nice to loosen it up but you can get by without it.

  • Torque wrench, probably 3/4" drive, if you can get one, will most likely be needed. A 3/4" socket set might make it a whole lot easier to break loose, too.

  • Very easy as ryder said. You may need help because it will be bit heavy. Will have to reinstall breakaway switch too if it is the same as mine.
  • Unbolt the old one, bolt up the new one. Check for height and placement of hitch and adjust accordingly.
