coachmen 5th wheel slide periodically works

Friend has a coachmen 5th wheel and rear slide will not work using wall switch. If you take a wrench and start to move wall manually just a slight bit the wall switch begins to work fine both in and out as many times as you want, but if you let it sit still for just a minute or two it quits working by the wall switch until you manually move it again.???? Any ideas
  • Operate the wall switch and have someone go underneath and gently tap on the end of the slide motor. I dont know the construction of the motor but if it has brushes and they are worn or sticking tapping on it may get the motor going. This is not a fix, just a way to isolate the problem.

I say gently because some motors have permanent magnet fields glued in the housing. Too hard of a tap can shatter the magnet and the pieces collapse against the armature and it's all over. Also check all the wiring connections as there are often twist wire connectors exposed to the elements.
  • It sounds like the motor is beginning to die or there is something causing extra friction in the slide mechanism.
