I would suggest you read online (Dieselstop.com) and be aware of the shortcoming of these engines. Keep your eyes open to any issues before they become problems. And find a really good independent diesel shop that's familiar with this engine to do maintenance on it.
As previously mentioned, the EGR coolers were source of problems. The biggest problem is with head problems--commonly fixed with "studding" the engine and using a new style head gasket. I would just leave the engine stock, and not try to hot rod it using tuners, etc.
Your alternative would be to put the truck on the retail market--if you can get near what you paid for it. Good luck!
I was talking to my diesel mechanic today. He was working on a truck with a blown 6.0, and the customer came in with a salvage yard 6.0. He's disassembling the engine and studding it. With the EGR mods and other required changes, it's a $3,800 job + the cost of the used engine--taking almost a full week labor.
