Questions on Galley Gray water tank

We just bought a 2005 Pilgrim Open Road fifth wheel.
There were no manuals with it.

We have always had a motorhome with a gray and a black tank. We kept the black tank closed and the gray open.

In this new to us fifth wheel. There are three dump valves, two of which are gray.

We had both gray valves open and were surprised when the kitchen sink started filling up with water as I was doing dishes.

AGAIN....Both gray valves were open.

The gray tank only drained when he opened the black tank valve.

The toilet wasn't over filling or over flowing, but the kitchen sink was filling up.

Are these two connected?

We've never had such a thing.
  • I suppose you do not want to wash dishes in the toilet or......

    Sorry could not resist.
  • I have a Legends 5th made by Pilgrim with the same setup. Mine were mislabeled from the factory.
  • 3 waste tanks...black (toilet) grey (shower/bathroom sink) GALLEY (Kitchen) is typical set up with 3 tanks

Kitchen sink backing up...galley full....drained when you opened 'black tank' drain valve.
    Wrong labeling.

    ID and relabel
  • The kitchen sink tank valve may not be working and is in the closed position all the time.
  • I have seen some RV's advertised that have gray tanks that flush the black tank on the way out. Maybe yours is that way, and you have two gray valves so you can flush the black with one, then a second rinse with the other. I think they should all be that way really.

If the two were connected, you would have known it as the sink was filling up (P.U.) :)

Agree with the others, test the valves on by one.
  • IMO, you'd be better off keeping the galley tank closed until you're ready to dump. You'll have the same type of issue with food and "stuff" piling up in that tank without enough water, same as a black tank. Besides, you want to have plenty of somewhat cleaner water to rinse the hose after dumping the black tank. Never having 2 grey tanks, I think I'd dump 1) black, 2) galley, 3) shower; seems to me that this would be the order of "cleanliness" of the liquid.

Personally, we've been using a basin for washing dishes, then dumping in the toilet for extra water in the black tank, especially when we're boon docking and in a bit of a conservation mode.

  • Get yourself a clear plastic elbow to attach between your drain hose, and the discharge pipe. Then test the flow from all of the sources as said above. If you had the clear elbow, it would have been obvious which one was the black tank contents.
  • Maybe the tank levers are mislabeled. The galley and black tank should not be connected. Sometimes the bathroom sink and black are connected, to put extra water into the black.

  • It sounds like the tanks were labeled wrong.

You can test this by opening a valve and running water through various sources until it drains out the open valve.
