I've had three different 5th wheel trailers with a custom fabed receiver hitch welded to the main frame rails and cross members. All three were made for 7.5k lb draw and 500 lb vertical load to my requests.

I've seen lightweight adjustable bolt on types that we see on some motor homes but IMO they would need beefed for towing a car.

This came through central Louisiana one day recently. Looked to be a 330 Peterbilt.

New Years day I was north bound on I-35 coming out of Austin, TX. South bound was a 5er, pulling a Smart car on a small trailer behind the trailer. I recalled seeing this thread, didn't have the chance to see the size of the TV. Nice looking way to go though!

There's many that hooked the car up behind there 5th wheel. But most if not all were using a Semi to tow with. As if your using a pickup to pull the camper. I can't see a reason to not use it.

Sorry, but I double tow most of the time, have checked many states and the 2 myths that are commonly posted about this topic are the 5th wheel first tow and the 2nd trailer restricted to a boat or ATV. I have found only 4 states out of 39 require the 1st be a 5er, one requires the 1st hitch be a pinned draw and only 3 have a restriction on the 2nd tow. Granted these laws change somewhat every year, but that is the info I found by going to the horses mouth in all the states I have double towed in. As a retired LEO, I know where to start the search in states I am interested in and NEVER use or even consult the online so called towing laws posted by dealers, selling something.

My recommendation is get on the phone or use email and start with 2 sources in each state, The top Law Enforcement in the state and the AGs office in each state. Once you have their answer, ask for it in writing and I have never been turned down on that request.

The OP's subject is not double towing in general; but towing a CAR behind a fiver. Huge difference.

What is 'most' on the internet is most people claiming something is the law and not having a clue about what they're talking about nor having ever read a single statute. The link above has all the state statutes.

I am not concerned. I really don't care. I was merely making the point that saying "most" is often wrong, and the person who said it doesn't even know or care that it is wrong.
THAT is how myths get perpetuated.
We should NOT be perpetuating myths, IMO.
When posting on any forum, we should be stating either facts or opinions. Opinions should be clearly identified as such.

I'm thrilled that folks posted links to their State statutes, at least...who knew?

Seems to me that just the fact that at least two States do have such restrictions ought to serve as enough evidence that others probably do, too.

Certainly a good heads up to prudent planners that if contemplatng double-tow it's wise to check the rules along the intended route before heading out.
