Headed out of town on vacation and in my side mirror I notice the wheel on driver side front axle of my Toy Hauler is sticking out about 5 or 6 inches beyond the fender! I immediatly pull over and find the wheel has slid off the spindle past the castle nut. After being towed to dealer we found the brake drum broken, the backing plate and brake shoes bent and the bearings destroyed. Everyone at the dealer has a different idea of what may have happened and of course they all said they had never seen anything like it before. Anyway, the people at Giant RV Murrieta Ca. were all over it when I told them we were on vacation and all our clothing and food for a week was in the Trailer. Even though they were swamped, they ran down the parts and had it fixed in less than 24 hours. Two thumbs up for Greg in the Service Dept. at Giant RV. (not so much for Lippert)Thankfully my wife talked me into purchasing an extended warranty earlier this year so we are covered.

We had almost the same thing happen last fall on our 44' voltage toyhauler, only 6 moths old and 2000 miles later headed to AZ. for the winter. We had stopped for fuel and checked everything out and headed down the road. 2 miles later we noticed smoke out the drivers side window, we pulled off and noticed the wheel at an odd angle. Jacked it up and the wheel fell off into my legs. Luckily we had just passed the Flagstaff, AZ. camping world. They were SUPER to us, but we had to sit a week because ours was under warranty from Lippert and they would not authorize a repair but sent a whole new axle to camping world. Camping World at Flagstaff,AZ. was outstanding to us while we waited on the axle. They also said they had not seen anything like this before and related ours to a bad bearing.

Good for them, and good for you praising them for it.

Very glad to hear the dealer came through for you. It's no fun when these things happen but fortunately no one was injured and it sounds like you found a dealer that understands the meaning of customer service.

Brakes were inpected and wheel bearings packed on 1/31/13 per records at Giant RV!

Kinda reminds me of when Mod Dave's wheel fell off a few years ago, just serviced by Weekend Warrior :h

Giant in Murrieta is one of the dealers we have shopped recently, thats a huge plus for their service.

Everything but the spindle was replaced.

This is usually caused by the brake shows not adjusted tight enough. Dexter Axle has a great tutorial on their website.

I've seen it happen on a couple trailers, both flat deck gooseneck trailers. These where non preventable. One was a bearing failure, just came apart not due to heat or lack of lube. Another had the castle nut back loose and off it came. Both dexter axles, 7k and 10k oil bath. The moral of the story, sometimes things just fail.

Good on Giant RV for getting the job done so quickly, nice to hear there are some good dealers out there. I'm just wondering how it occurred, it should have been noticed when the wheels were pulled for brake inspection and repack the bearings. If the toy hauler was the 2008 in your sig, its now 5-6 years old and surely this had been done?? Maybe the cotter pin wasn't re-installed, and the castle nut backed off and started this near disaster?

I lost a wheel bearing 10 miles from our destination over the 4th of July holiday weekend. Went to Tractor Supply to get a bearing kit, because all the nearby RV dealers were closed. Unfortunately they didn't have a castle nut and washer which I needed since the one I had had big burrs on it, long story short after calling around and not finding one the store manager let me go in the back of the store and use their grinder to flatten the washer I needed. Great customer service at the Ireland Road Tractor Supply in South Bend, Indiana!

Wow, not only to the tire etc but the customer service. I remember in my undergrad college my tire in my car came loose, busted off a hub bolt. I did a bunch of calculations at various torques etc & to make a long story short determined dealer was at fault. Of course they didn't buy it but the math and visuals said otherwise. They eventually made it right.
