A few questions

I have done a lot of research and we're getting close to our closing date(sept 18th)
We have lived in the Houston area for over 30 years and will full time for awhile before we buy another place probably somewhere in mid arkansas so we can be central between all the kids / grandkids but plan to roam for a year before seriously looking for a new much smaller place. So since we are already Tx residents looks like we will do the escapees address and mail. I'm assuming we will need to change our drivers licenses to the Livingston/ Polk county address of escapees provided. We have all of our few current bills set up to be handled online so not really worried much about mail. One question I can't seem to find the answer to is concerning my TX. CHL is it possible to use an escapees address and hold the CHL or will I have to relinquish it? If I have to give that up how do you legally keep your firearms close by?
If we can't figure out a few things we may just use my sister-in-laws address who live nearby but would rather not have to bother them with getting extra mail and any confusion it may cause them when we do completely change to a new address.
  • Steve,

If you were in Houston, why not spend the few minutes and drive north to Livingston and have the inspection done at a place that is familiar with fulltimers. And if you were within 3 months of when your registration renewal was do, just do it online and then, if and when you return to the state, do the inspection within 3 days of returning.

Some people are really over thinking this issue. It is so easy to take care of, I'm not sure what the 'big deal' is all about?

  • Two things.

Texas CHL is valid with your Escapees Livingston address.

With the Livingston address you only have to get your vehicles safety inspected, as long as you get them inspected in a county that doesn't require environmental inspections. It's a bit of a sore point for me because when I returned to Texas after a year on the road I landed in Houston and therefore, even with a Livingston address, I had to get both safety and environmental inspections. Nobody would inspect my 33' class A coach because it didn't fit in their teeny inspection bays. It was a royal pain in the patootie! I finally crossed my fingers and drove my coach, with expired plates and sticker, to San Marcos where I finally was able to obey the poorly thought out law. Since I live full time in my RV I'm seriously thinking of becoming a South Dakota resident next year.

  • You also want to make sure that your vehicle inspections are up to date, and not find out 1/2 way through a trip to Alaska that you 'must' be back in Texas in 10 days to get the vehicle inspected, the registration renewed, and your drivers license will expire in 30 days on your birthday.

Poor information!!! If you check the web site, it reads that if you are OUT OF STATE and inspection/registration is due, you just need to check the box that says "you are out of state". When you return to the state, then get inspected. Drivers license can be renewed on line every other time.

  • CHL with SKP address has been used by us since 1995, first year of law.

    Yes,

I would also suggest that your 'home address' be your sister's home, while mailing address be in Livingston.

You should be able to renew your drivers license a few months early of it's renewal date. You probably need to show up at your DMV to figure everything out. .

Your premise is false. You can do the online renewal for vehicle registration and not be in the state, you just indicate you're out of state and that you will be have the vehicle inspected when you return to the state. We've been out of state for 2 years now, will probably be another 2-3 years before we are 'in state' with the coach again. We know people who have been gone for 12 years at a time (longest you can go without renewing DL in person).

I do not understand why you continue to give out false information.

Also, if you do end up using your sister as an adress, you can still use Escapees as a mailing address so she won't have to deal with your mail.

  • Although not a Texan, your Livingston Excapee address should be sufficient.
Why don't you contact them to be sure.
