gps phone app

We will be traveling cross country soon and will either have to upgrade our present GPS to one that will have low clearance and is for RV. I have seen some phone apps that offer RV routes, but don't know much about them. On I came across is SMART RV ROUTE. Anyone have experience with this one or another?

Since you are traveling across country in a rig that is about the same height as most commercial truck tractor/trailers, ask yourself how many of them have their I-phones wedged up on the dash using them for navigation.....I suspect none of them do.

If you want to make sure you are traveling safely on the correct roads for your height, weight, and other specifications you need 3 things:
1) RV or Truck GPS
2) Current Trucker's Atlas
3) Pay attention to each and every sign while driving.

The standard Co-Pilot App will only warn of bridges/ etc which are lower than 13.0 ft.

If the person needs warnings for 13 ft 6 inches or lower - the standard Co-Pilot App will route then under too low bridges.

I would assume that RV folks would prefer the Co-Pilot Truck app which allows custom vehicle dimensions - up to 13'6" height, 53 ft length, 120" width and 132,000 lbs weight.

You can also set HazMat categories - such as Propane - to avoid restricted bridges/ tunnels.

Those are the same type things which RV specific GPS units can do.

Which is why we recommend an RV or Truck specialized GPS, and the same applies to Co-Pilot - though Co-Pilot Truck costs $150.

Yes, the standard $15 Co-Pilot does have an RV mode - but it is for smaller RVs, not tall 5th wheels, class A DP, etc.

Howdy!

I been using Co-Pilot gps app for a few years now and works great. You can set the height in the app up to 13' in the RV setting. No data connection needed once you downloat the app and maps you want. As stated just keep you phone or tablet plugged in.

CoPilot app is great! You can even subscribe to traffic alerts. Has an RV setting.

I am using GPS/Copilot. It dose not need a internet or cell phone connection because the maps are downloaded into the phone. I plug the phone into the 12 volt charger and put the phone in airplane mode so the phone won't connect to any service but the GPS function still works. The travel guides I am using for a trip to Alaska lists the GPS coordinates of each campsite, and I can just enter these into the system instead of a address.

Co-Pilot - doesn't use data once all the maps are downloaded. And keep your phone plugged in. We use it all the time and allows us to define the bridge height limit for our rig.

+1 on phone power issues. We use a Garmin (RV706) for traveling even though our '14 f350 has a built in GPS. I find the Garmin far superior to the stock Ford. The Garmin seems to generate routes better plus offers easier routing and has lifetime updates. Of course it has a much larger screen than a phone. The GPS on your phone will get you by, but you will not be satisfied!

Trouble with using your phone as a FULL TIME gps is that it will burn through a lot of battery and lots of your data.

We have a Garmin for long runs and full time use. We use the phone gps for a quick look and quick search.
