Looking to save $$$ need advice

I would like to see if you feel it is better to full time in a RV / Trailer versus renting an apartment. Like the idea of being able to move without having a lease if i don't like the place i am in. What about costs? What have you experienced? I am looking to buy a unit park it and set up residence.
  • For us...
It is cheaper to live in our 5'er than it was our S&B, here's why-
Truck is paid for, 5'er isn't but payment is small
No yard maintaince- it was costing us $125 a month in general yard stuff
No power bill- campground is $36mth everything included, house was 180-300
Water included at park, house it was 45 a mth
No county property tax- house was 1100
No homeowners ins, we have fulltimers on our rig but it is alot cheaper than the house in hurricane alley.
We find it to be cheaper but alot expense is not doubled now.
  • It can be cheaper if you are smart about it but really hard to say based on the limited info you provided.

Go with a used truck & RV, do the maintenance yourself and stay in inexpensive areas and getting by on $1000-1500/month is doable.

Go with new high end MH, pay someone to do all the maintenance and stay in popular areas at the best parks and you can easily push into the $5-10k/month range.
  • Depends what your budget is. There are people who fulltime on $1000 or less. In the Rio Grande Valley (Texas) there are lots of monthly rv parks with special prices from $150 a month. Last year we never spent over $110 a month for Sept, Oct and November. You need to look around. Your travel will be determined by your fuel expense and the mpg that your rig attains. Some people move every month, some stay put for less or longer depending on special pricing that is available.

Boondocking in Walmarts, state park passes in some states are a super bargain like in New Mexico ($225 a month for non-resident, space and water, electric is $4 a day). Your age may be a determining factor in the price of rv sites.

Passport America (50% off rv parks for a night or two while in transit, or moving regularly)

If you can travel, anything beats sitting in an apartment twiddling your thumbs when there are so many things to see and do in the great outdoors, museums, galleries, etc.
  • I doubt it. The bar is pretty low on renting and RV life isn't exactly cheap. About the same as a small house on average assuming you stay put a lot. Otherwise it gets expensive pretty quickly if you start filling up the fuel tank and moving around.

While some can make it work on the cheap, I'd say on average you'd be better off and more comfortable in an apartment if money is really of concern.
  • Moving from place to place in an RV is usually not cheaper. You may be able to save money by living in one place in a trailer or park model.
  • Probably cheaper to rent an apartment than have a truck payment, trailer payment (plus insurances) and lot rent. If anything breaks you pay to fix it as well.
  • Depends on what you're looking for.

    1. Will you be working??
    2. How long will you be staying in one place??
    3. What kind of RV are you looking for??
    4. Factor in the cost of the purchase.
    5. Will you be staying in Mississippi??
    6. Simply living permanently in an RV is not full timing.
    7. If you are only going to park it in a spot and live in it, stay with a trailer. Less expensive by far....Dennis
  • Way too many variables to really answer this question, especially after looking at your previous posts where you're bouncing from TT to 5er to park model.
