Recommend a good document scanner for the rv

Hello! It seems I am in need of another appliance! I need to get a document scanner for the RV. Being Full-Time RVers, we have drastically cut down on the amount of paperwork we carry. However, we'd like to par down even more. We need to get a good document scanner to scan up anything that we deem important enough to keep a copy of. So, it needs to be small enough to carry around in the RV - however, it needs to create a really good quality copy PLUS we are getting rid of any extra storage we have outside of the RV so I have a bunch of paperwork in file cabinets that I need to scan up so I need something that will stand up to that test. Something that I could insert multiple pieces of paper in and that could scan front and back at the same time maybe. Any suggestions?

The Neat Company has a portable scanner that is high quality, color and double sided. It connects using your USB port and is stored in its case. Overall size is approximately 2 1/2" square x about 12" long. I have used mine for about five years with excellent results.
It must be fed manually. I have a Snap Scan for my SB office and the Neat portable is of similar quality.
If you are looking for a quality scanner and small size, I believe this is about as good as it gets. Price is about $150.00, not cheap, but excellent quality.

Are you sure you don't already have what you are seeking. If you have a printer with a scanner bed it may be capable of doing 2 sided scanning to PDF TIF or JPEG. The down side is you may will probably have to scan each side individually. My HP 5530 Envy does this quite handily ($89). For documents I use PDF which allows me to scan in as many pages as I want and store it as one document to a file of my choosing.

If you really want a device that will allow the feeding of multiple page documents from a tray and scanning 2 sides at once, then you are talking about a machine that is neither small nor inexpensive.

The reliability of digital media is greatly improved but, you should have a reliable backup for all important documents.

I stopped saving any paper in 2005, WannaVol, went completely to PDF scans and downloads, and I have to say now my life is a lot tidier and certainly more compact. Only about 3 file folders of critical documents, and they live in the safe deposit box. Every document for 9 years travels along with me, on a USB drive.

seeing this makes me think that I should invest in a feed scanner and begin scanning photos, documents, etc while I am waiting for time to retire and purchase fulltime MH. I have an all-in-one printer/scanner/fax but having a feed scanner would sure make getting all my paper under control before I get to the point that it becomes a time crunch.

For Android OS phones -- Cam Scanner app. Works very very well. I was about to buy a scanner several years ago, then discovered this app, so I haven't needed to buy a scanner.

I use a Canon LiDE 110.
It's a full page scanner with software to make PDF's, copies to a printer or attach to an email. Doesn't require separate power. Power is through the USB Cable
Here's one at Amazon.

We full time and use a Brother all in one scanner/printer and couldn't be happier with it.
We use it wireless so it can go anyplace, bed room, dash, wherever.

We use Verizon MiFi. The key for us was getting an upgraded WiFi printer. We got a new (pretty compact) printer from Walmart for under $70.00 that is wireless WiFi. We can print from laptops, I-phones, or I-pads. Any documents we want to save we can scan into our I-phones or I-pad. I use TinyScan app on my phone, which was a free app when I downloaded it.

Being full time and paperless with everything we don't have much we need to save anyway.

Anybody have any experience with one of those "wand" style handheld scanners?

They look pretty small and portable, but do they work?

I bought a Visioner Mobility Cordless Color Scanner from Fry's recently and love it. It is completely cordless, with rechargeable batteries and a memory card for storage if you do not want to connect it to your computer. I use it for photos and it will scan as PDF, it is quick, small enough to carry in a computer case and the photos come out great. It is limited to a 14" photo or document, so most of my legal forms scan very easily. I found the cordless option very handy while scanning a bunch of family photos, as the family discussed photos around the table, I was scanning them and still able to be part of the conversation. JH

We have an HP Photosmart 6525. It prints, copys, scans, and faxes. It's wireless and we can print or copy from our laptops, tablets, or phones.

Totally agree on the ScanSnap. Small, high quality with document feeder. Measures about 9 inches x 4 inches and does double sided scanning on one pass. Excellent for reproduction of high quality photos as well. Will scan a PDF and turn it into a word document. I use it mainly for reproducing or modifying business contracts and photos and document storage. Can plug in using AC adapter or just use the usb on the computer for power. I have had one for years and use it often. Made by Fujitsu. Can purchase on line and have it delivered to your door.

We carry an inexpensive all-in-one HP printer from WALMART that runs on 120VAC in our POPUP... HP Photosmart C4640 which is wired. Probably using a wireless model would be better. We carry a Dell M90 Laptop and a small HP Laptop and use the Verizon MIFI to connect us to the internet just about anywhere we go... Everything connects up just like at home... The MIFI WIFI HOT SPOT also connects up all of our tablets etc.. My Dell M90 sits in its docking station and connects to all of the external items just like at home. When we get back home I just pull out the M90 and put it into its docking station at home. Operations almost the same whether at home or on the road.
