Cant you just file for a lost title?

The vehicle is being basically driven around with a blank check inside it

I have a question for Jim Lewis and Qualitas. It is a respectable and polite question.

Can EITHER Qualitas or Lewis and Lewis direct me to a consumer package as furnished with a surplus line broker policy and POINT OUT where in the package the need to keep the ownership certificate SEPARATE (the word SAFE is an utter COP OUT) from the insured vehicle. How can this apply to a single vehicle being driven? This means I am asking for an answer.

Thanks but this was Canadian owned and registered vehicle. We do not have a title to a vehicle. There ain't no such animal. The Vehicle Registration is all we have. Copies didn't have much weight. I have offered to have the registaion agency e-mail them a copy directly but have not yet heard back.

Perhaps if you explain to Qualitas and Mr. Lewis that hundreds if not thousands of US and Canadian motorists are closely following this situation and if they do not settle up soon we will never be purchasing coverage from them again!!

Are you referring to the title or the registration? Two things completely different in Colorado.

Registration is required to be in the vehicle, but title paperwork is not.

Titles to my stuff are kept at home under lock and key.

This is also true for the states of WA and CA. Driving the Baja, when we come to a military checkpoint, we are sometimes asked for our registration - this allows us to drive a foreign plated vehicle legally (because we don't need a TIP here). We also keep a copy of our title in the vehicle, but not the original. We've never been asked for the title or copy of title - only the registration.

When checking the WA State DOT website, they do reissue titles when lost or stolen but not when a vehicle is reported stolen. This is probably to prevent the thief from obtaining the title.

I see that in Canada there is not a separate document for Certificate of Title and Registration. It seems the insurer covering a Canadian vehicle should know that you are required to carry these documents when they write your policy.

Do you have a Department of Insurance or equivalent where you can file a complaint? Let your insurer know you are going to start that process and often they change there tune. It has worked for me in the past.

I wish you much luck and am so sorry about this situation. Am interested in the progress you make and what you learn. Like BrianSue, I would never purchase coverage from this insurer.

There are no titles in Canada. Your registration is proof of ownership and is used when you sell the vehicle. The Qualitas person who wrote that note should be fired!!! AS Cr stated the law requires that registration to be in the vehicle. I remember when vehicles had an exposed steering column. Insurance agents would supply you with a registration holder that had an elastic strap to fasten to the column! CR: Did you get a duplicate registration? Won't BC supply one? Will Qualitas accept a duplicate? When I get home I am going to MPIC and asking for duplicates for all my vehicles. I will keep them at my office and when required could be faxed or Fedexed to whomever.

There is no Insurance commissioner in the USA or Canada that is recognized in Mexico. Briansue: I wonder if all insurance companies in Mexico fallow this same procedure? If so it would not matter where you bought the insurance. CR: You need to call Lewis and Lewis and speak to Jim Lewis. He will set things straight. This whole episode is a lesson for all: Things are different in Mexico. Customer service is often just wishful thinking. Common sense stops @ km21. Bureaucracies rule!! Some things in Mexico are stuck in about 1950!

I would think the Lewis & Lewis people would be outraged by this and applying all the pressure they can in places they have access to that the rest of us would not. If they are not standing by their clients why should anyone continue to be their clients? It is in their best interest to get to work on this matter with every effort they can muster. As stated above - whoever wrote that denial of claim should be fired immediately if not sooner. These people were robbed - they did not give the vehicle away.
