06 Ford Chassis or Workhorse Same year ??

Was wanting to know if anyone has had the 8.1 Workhorse chassis and the newer 06 Ford chassis with more HP, what one was better as to performance, fuel mileage, handling, transmission, repairs, etc.

I am looking at newer motorhomes (32ft) but on the fence about the Ford, my recent 02 8.1 Workhorse with GM trans was a great RV, strong, no issues and to bad on gas.. (26ft)

Ford or Workhorse, (06 or newer) let me hear the issues.. Good or Bad..

  • I've had one 8.1 in an '04 Allegro Bay with an Allison tranny and I've had three units, one of them a 31' class C, and two, an '11 and now a Thor Daybreak XD34 with the Ford V-10. Never really cared for the 8.1 and have progressively liked the Ford V-10 better with each upgrade in year. I really like the way the Thor preforms and and handles at 9'longer than the previous unit, and brand new, I'm getting better gas mileage and a far better ride,
  • I've owned both and liked both! 99 with a Ford and 2004 with the Workhorse & 8.1. I chose the Chevy over the Ford because the Big Block Chevy was more responsive. I was told since 99 that Ford has really improved there Triton motor?
  • when I was looking I wanted the Allison tranny but my ford has run 60000 and 8 years and nothing has broke. The only thing I would want different would be full body paint . but my sticker have held up very well.
  • I would go by which floor plan you like best. It depends on how you drive them, as to gas mileage. I doubt the either one will get the mileage you are getting now with your Flair. The ride and handling will be better though. If they are near you, drive them both over the same routes, with the DW, and decide which one you prefer.
  • I went through the same research before I purchased my 2005 Bounder 32W on a 04 Workhorse W20 chassis. IMHO the 8.1 GM engine with Allison transmission (5spd with grade brake) was superior to the Ford of the same vintage. The 06 ford most likely has the 04/05 engine and tranny as the 3 valve V10 engine was not introduced until 06. (I believe Ford skipped designating a 05 drive train) Workhorse introduced the 6spd Allison in 06. Ford was much more competitive after the 06 upgrades. I have been very happy with the Bounder. Good luck!

  • I just bought an 07 Southwind on a Workhorse W-22 Chassis. I asked a lot of questions concerning the Worhorse vs Ford........the general concensus was they are both about equal, most said it wouldn't be a deal breaker one way or another. However, everyone thought highly of the Allison transmission....and on a personal note it's much easier getting in and out of the seat with the lower dog house on the Workhorse then on the Ford. The Ford also is a little noisier on a grade due to a slightly higher RPM.
If you're looking at a 32 ft motohrome, and end up with a Workhorse, I'd try to get into an 07 or newer. The reason, they have a grade brake and have the 22.5 inch tires. I had an 03 Southwind on W-20 with 19.5 inch tires and had to run around 90psi in the tires.......I just had my 07 weighed and with the 22.5 tires, I run 75psi.......the ride is so much better in the 07 then the 03.....it's amazing. Good Luck
