Thank you to all that has responded. I so have my heart set on a 45' DP and most of you all have confirmed what I already thought to be true. I did read in another post on this site that the roads may be more difficult to travel than the actual sites. I suppose that's when the toad will be pretty handy...checking out the roads and being able to prepare.
You might be overthinking this issue. Not once have I had to unhook the toad to scout out a road although I often unhook before proceeding to the site....takes 2 minutes while DW is registering.
There are resources to check on the roads to see if they can accommodate your coach. We drive the million dollar highway every year with my Jeep in tow and I would think it is one of the harder passes for a 40+ MH to traverse. I find it is no problem.

If we are stopping for just one night, we certainly like a pull-through if we can get it.
We like nice parks with good connections. Then we'll take the toad out for touring.
MM. - Executive45Explorer IIIAbout those roads...I don't think the good folks that design the State Parks in California have never been in an RV. Instead they like to make the roads pretty narrow and "enhance" them by placing huge boulders, just high enough to reach your storage bins yet low enough to be out of your line of sight, along every curve and campsite...:M......Dennis

- IvylogExplorer IIIHere are 8 of my posts on this subject. I built my MH garage big enough for a 45'.:B
- holstein13ExplorerNo, it's not difficult. I'd say about 15% of private parks in the East can't accommodate a 45 footer. Public campgrounds in wooded areas might be closer to 75% say they can't handle them. But sometimes they fit them in anyway.
- RedJeepExplorerI have a 36' class A. That is as big as I would ever go. Above 36', for example, you can't camp at Carlsbad State Beach Park, nor can you camp at the only rv park within the city of Vancouver BC. We also have a 41' toy hauler. So, it boils down to where you want to camp. Good luck and safe travels!
- TrapExplorerSome of our friends had 40' coaches and warned us about going bigger cause of size. So far our 44'3" coach has fit everywhere they have.
- S-n-LExplorerWe have been having very good success in private rv parks, not so much success in national or state parks. We do call ahead to make sure if we can fit.
For us the advantages of having our 45 ft coach greatly out-way any disadvantages. We can always find somewhere to put the coach.
