99 F53 rear brake rotors

I need to replace the rear rotors on my 99 Southwind V10 F53 chassis.
Has anyone done a "99"? Some say you need to pull the axil and some say you don't.
I know it'll be obvious when I get into it, but I'd like to know before I start.

Thanks,
Ellis
  • Get 2 empty 5 gallon buckets. One to sit on and one to drop the hub assembly on. Just let the outer end of the hub assembly rotate down into the bucket. the rotor will rest on the lip of the bucket and all the grease will be trapped. You will get dirt and rust into the bearing area when unbolting the rotor, so cleaning and packing bearings will be required. The bearing grease is will keep the bearings lubed until the rear end grease (75W 140 syn.) migrates to the hub.

  • Thanks for the torque info.
I'll get cracking tomorrow if weather is good.
  • put a chalk mark and you should be good. This is all that I can find on my cd.

for the big nut under description it says. rear hub nut (to set bearings, back off the hub nut 90 degrees, retighten.) and the torque spec for that is 70 footpounds. then for the 8 small bolts
(axle shaft bolts) im showing 98 foot pounds .

    Hope this what your asking.
  • Thanks guys! I've pulled the tires and indeed I have to pull the axil. Got several spindle sockets (hope one is correct). Have all the parts (fully loaded calipers, rotors and seals if needed), I'm just waiting for the DVD manual to arrive for torque specs etc.

Made a platform on my little floor jack to support the wheel hub assembly when removing and installing. I wish I new where the rough balance point is.
  • On the older 460 F53 chassis (88-97) you had to pull the axle and remove the hub to get to the rotor bolts. That was a Dana 80 rear end assembly. I suspect yours will require the same.

  • I miss read. Been a while since I had this apart. Here are the step for my 99.

    Removal
    1. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    2. Remove the anchor plate.
    3. Remove the axle shaft .
    4. Using a suitable socket, remove the hub nut.
    6. Remove the outer rear wheel bearing.
    7. Remove the rear hub and brake disc assembly.
    8. Remove the bolts and separate the rear hub from the rear brake disc.
