Best platform for travelling with kids

We are going to pick up a new RV this summer and are curious what folks think is the best setup for travelling with 2 young kids. We are torn between a class A diesel (which we like the fit and finish of the best) and a 5th wheel toy hauler (which has all the extra sleeping arrangements).
Since this will be the first time we've done RVing with kids any advice from experienced folks is appreciated. We've owned 5th wheels and a diesel pusher but never with kids. We had also toyed with the idea of truck camper because we love how easy to get back into national forests it is. That would be our intended use, to visit national parks and Colorado/Wyo/NM national forests.
  • We loved our pop-up with the kids. Depending on which NP you intend to visit, we've run into limitations due to no hard sides and bears. NP also have smaller sites so that is a factor. When we go the RV route, it will be a medium size C that will fit in NP sites. I can't tell you the exact space limitations off hand.
  • We've had TT's, a 5er, and now a Class A. For us it is the Class A. Kids, dogs, mom, dad can't all fit in the pick up truck. The Class A allows everyone room to move around.
  • The 5th wheel toy hauler ahs some good options for those with kids. First off you can have them use the back door only. That way they will only track up the rubber floors. Also it creates more of a separate room for them. A kids only space.

Then you have the community spare of the living room and kitchen. On top of that you and the spouse still get to have a private bedroom. For my money that is the best set up if traveling with kids.

Since it's grand kids for maybe two months, what are you doing the rest of the year should determine what you buy. Snowbirding in Fla for 3+ months leans towards a 5er although we do it in a DP as it's the nicest and most expensive way to travel. I would not let the kid's use be the deciding factor.
  • Personally I would go with the toy hauler...like an Attitude.
  • Kids are not going to care what type of vehicle they are traveling in!

Buy the RV that suits YOU. You are the ones that have to drive it and figure out if it is big enough or has a layout that fits x amount of people traveling in it.

All kids care about is where they are going and are we there yet.
  • Best one I saw some years ago:

A trawler heading down the bay to an anchorage. 4 adults relaxing in the cockpit, two more up on the bridge conning the boat, 4 kids in life jackets riding in the dinghy which was being towed with several hundred feet of line. :B
  • First, are they your kids and in that case, they'll be with you on every trip, or are you grandparents taking the kids on a few trips?

Also, how old are the children?

As far as using national forest campgrounds in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico... we easily fit our 40' motorhome in many campgrounds in those states.

Since you've had a motorhome and 5th wheel previously, you must know the amount of space each can have. Bunk models are very popular now. If you have to convert a dining table to a bed, that's a pain and is only good for small children. Likewise, having to make up the sofa every night limits the time you can stay up and early risers might be inconvenienced. I guess, to me, a toy hauler or something with bunks would be ideal if kids traveled with you all the time. A truck camper would be out.
