Additional fact that makes this the likely solution: The stopper to the sink had been removed from the drain & was laying on the counter when I got the keys back. I've never done that & never seen it done, but I wonder if they noticed the problem there.

Or a few drops of food color in sink/shower drains.
Might want to peruse that owners manual closer and investigate any other issues you are not aware of.
